Patera Reaches Playa Bastián in Costa Teguise as Search Continues for Missing Passengers

A small migrant boat carrying around 20 people reached Playa Bastián in Costa Teguise early Wednesday morning, prompting a search operation along the surrounding area.

Residents and visitors in Costa Teguise, Lanzarote, may have noticed increased emergency and security activity around Playa Bastián this morning after a wooden boat carrying a group of migrants reached the beach.

The incident happened during the early hours of Wednesday, September 9, 2026, with the first alert received at approximately 7:15am.

According to information from the Lanzarote Security and Emergency Consortium, a local resident spotted the vessel approaching the coastline and alerted the emergency services. The arrival was subsequently confirmed by CECOES 112, which coordinated the response.

19 people located after arriving at Playa Bastián

Initial reports indicated that around 20 people were aboard the wooden boat when it reached Playa Bastián in Costa Teguise.

By later in the morning, emergency and security personnel had located 19 people from the group. Reports state that most were adult men of Maghrebi origin, with several minors also among those located, including a girl.

Several people reportedly moved away from the beach after coming ashore, leading to a search of the surrounding area for an estimated three or four additional passengers.

The search was still underway during the morning, with emergency services and security personnel operating in the area.

Emergency services attend the scene

The alert from the resident allowed emergency services and security forces to be mobilised to Playa Bastián, one of the well-known beaches on the Costa Teguise coastline.

The response included health and security personnel, with efforts focused on locating those who had dispersed and checking on the condition of those who had already been found.

At the time of the latest reports available, there had been no indication of a major medical emergency involving those located.

Lanzarote migration arrivals

The arrival of small boats from the African coast is an ongoing humanitarian issue affecting the Canary Islands, with Lanzarote’s geographical position making it one of the islands involved in maritime migration routes towards the archipelago.

Today’s arrival at Costa Teguise is notable because the boat reached the shoreline directly, after being spotted by a member of the public from land.

For now, the focus remains on ensuring that everyone who travelled on the boat is located and receives appropriate assistance.
