Playa Blanca Cracks Down on Illegal Rental Scooters as Lanzarote Tightens Tourist Safety Rules

Visitors to Lanzarote may notice fewer rental electric scooters around Playa Blanca this week after local police removed more than 80 scooters operating without the required municipal permits.

The operation, carried out by Yaiza Local Police between 9 and 13 May, saw 82 electric scooters removed from public streets and tourist areas across Playa Blanca. Authorities say the scooters were part of a shared rental system operating without official authorisation from the local council.

The scooters have now been impounded and placed in municipal storage while the company involved faces possible sanctions for unauthorised commercial activity.

Why Playa Blanca Is Taking Action

According to the Ayuntamiento de Yaiza, the rental operation allegedly breached local regulations introduced in 2024 to better control the use of electric scooters and other personal mobility vehicles (VMPs).

Local authorities say the aim is not to ban scooters entirely, but to improve safety and reduce problems that have increasingly affected busy tourist resorts in Lanzarote.

In recent years, residents and visitors have complained about:

  • scooters riding on promenades
  • dangerous driving near pedestrians
  • scooters abandoned on pavements
  • accidents involving tourists
  • clutter in busy resort areas

Mayor Óscar Noda thanked police officers involved in the operation and said the municipality wants tourism and modern mobility services to work together in a safer and more organised way.

New Electric Scooter Laws in Spain for 2026

The Playa Blanca crackdown comes as Spain introduces stricter nationwide rules for electric scooters and personal mobility vehicles.

Tourists visiting Lanzarote should now be aware of the latest scooter regulations, which may vary slightly between municipalities but increasingly follow national DGT traffic guidelines.

Latest Scooter Rules Tourists Should Know

Current and upcoming rules include:

  • Electric scooters cannot normally be ridden on pavements or pedestrian-only promenades
  • Maximum speed is generally limited to 25 km/h
  • Riders may be required to carry identification
  • Many municipalities now require helmets
  • Reflective clothing and lights are recommended at night
  • Mobile phone use while riding is prohibited
  • Riding under the influence of alcohol or drugs carries fines
  • Insurance requirements are becoming stricter across Spain
  • Rental operators must obtain municipal permission to operate legally

Several Canary Islands tourist destinations, including parts of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, have also started increasing enforcement against uninsured or illegally operated scooters.

What This Means for Lanzarote Tourists

Tourists can still legally use privately owned or properly licensed rental scooters in Lanzarote, but visitors are being encouraged to follow local traffic rules carefully, especially in busy resort areas such as:

The latest action in Playa Blanca is being viewed by many residents as part of a wider effort to improve safety, reduce congestion, and maintain Lanzarote’s reputation as a clean, family-friendly holiday destination.

People planning to rent scooters should ensure they use authorised companies and follow local regulations.

Local authorities say the goal is to make resort areas safer and more enjoyable for both tourists and residents.
