Playa Blanca Hotel Expansion Rejected: Why the Cabildo Refused 308 Beds

Plans to add 308 guest beds to a hotel in Playa Blanca have been rejected by Lanzarote’s Cabildo, following a technical assessment that found the proposed expansion did not meet the relevant requirements.

The decision, announced on 20 October 2026, concerns a hotel extension in the municipality of Yaiza. The proposal included 154 accommodation units, with capacity for 308 guests. However, the island authority concluded that the application could not be approved in its submitted form.

Why was the Playa Blanca hotel extension refused?

According to the technical assessment, three floors in the northern section of the proposed extension were not connected by a lift. The report said this did not comply with the applicable regulations, and there was no record of an exemption having been granted by the Canary Islands Government.

As a result, the Cabildo’s governing council refused the requested tourism authorisation and provisional classification for the expansion.

The decision relates to the project’s compliance with the rules rather than a general announcement that all hotel development in Playa Blanca has been stopped. Any future proposal would need to address the issues identified and follow the relevant authorisation process.

A second tourist accommodation proposal also rejected

The Cabildo also refused a separate application involving a house in Playa Blanca that its owners wanted to convert into a tourist villa for up to 14 guests.

The technical review identified concerns about whether the property’s capacity matched its layout, as well as the entrances and internal arrangement. These were considered insufficient to prevent rooms being let separately or different groups using the property at the same time. The assessment also found that some minimum equipment requirements for the proposed classification were not met.

Both decisions were based on technical reports identifying shortcomings under the applicable rules. The island government’s position was that the projects could not receive the requested authorisation as submitted.

What could this mean for tourism in Lanzarote?

Playa Blanca is one of Lanzarote’s best-known holiday resorts, attracting visitors with its seafront promenade, beaches, restaurants, marina and views towards Fuerteventura. Decisions about new tourist accommodation are therefore relevant to holidaymakers, local residents and businesses across the south of the island.

The refusal of these two applications does not, by itself, mean that visitors should expect changes to existing hotel bookings or holidays. The announcement concerns specific development proposals, not a closure of the resort or a change to current visitor access.

More broadly, the case highlights the role of planning and technical requirements in decisions about tourism accommodation in Lanzarote. New hotel extensions and tourist villas must meet the relevant standards before they can be authorised.

Will the hotel expansion be reconsidered?

The announcement confirms that the applications were rejected as presented. It does not establish that a revised application will definitely be submitted or approved. Any next steps would depend on the applicants and the relevant planning and tourism authorisation procedures.

For residents and tourism businesses, the wider question of how Lanzarote manages future accommodation growth remains important. For visitors planning a holiday in Playa Blanca, there is no indication in this decision alone that normal holiday activities or existing accommodation arrangements are affected.

We will continue to follow developments affecting Playa Blanca and tourism across Lanzarote as further verified information becomes available.
