Playa Reducto Closed Again After Suspected Sewage Contamination
Visitors and residents are once again being advised to avoid entering the water at Playa Reducto in Arrecife after the beach was temporarily closed due to suspected sewage contamination.
Lifeguards raised the red flag after what appeared to be sewage was detected in the sea near Punta del Camello, the rocky headland located at the western end of Playa Reducto. As a precaution, the beach was immediately closed to swimmers while the source of the contamination is investigated.
Investigation Underway
Arrecife Town Hall has requested that the Lanzarote Water Consortium investigates the incident to determine exactly where the contamination originated.
Initial reports suggest the issue could be connected to problems within the island’s wastewater network. Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause and further water quality testing is expected before any decision is made about reopening the beach.
Not the First Closure
The latest closure follows a series of sewage-related incidents that have affected Playa Reducto over the past year.
The beach was previously closed for several months after repeated water quality tests detected contamination. During that period, engineers carried out investigations and repair work on ageing sections of Arrecife’s sewer infrastructure before Public Health authorities declared the water safe for bathing earlier this year.
This new closure will undoubtedly disappoint both local residents and tourists, particularly during one of the busiest periods of the summer season.
Advice for Visitors
If you’re staying in Arrecife or planning a day at Playa Reducto, it’s worth checking the latest information before travelling. Bathing should only resume once Public Health authorities confirm that water quality has returned to safe levels.
Fortunately, Lanzarote still offers many other excellent beaches where swimming is unaffected, although visitors should always pay attention to the colour of the beach flags and follow any instructions given by lifeguards.
Will the Beach Reopen Soon?
At this stage, there is no confirmed reopening date. The beach will remain closed until laboratory testing confirms the water is safe and the source of the suspected contamination has been identified and addressed. Authorities are expected to provide further updates as the investigation progresses.
