Police Called After Group of Young People Clash in Arrecife’s Simón Bolívar Square

A late-evening confrontation involving around ten young people led to the intervention of Policía Local de Arrecife on Friday night, as concerns about behaviour in the city centre square continue to be raised by local residents.

A disturbance involving a group of young people brought police to Plaza Simón Bolívar in Arrecife, Lanzarote, on Friday evening, 4 September.

According to eyewitness accounts reported by local media, the incident happened at approximately 9:30pm, when around ten young people became involved in a confrontation. What began as an argument reportedly became increasingly heated, with shouting, insults and threats of violence.

As the situation developed, more people gathered around the group, prompting the Arrecife Local Police to attend and intervene.

Adult reportedly intervened during confrontation

During the incident, an adult reportedly entered the park on a motorcycle. Witnesses said the man appeared to become involved because of concerns for a minor who was present.

However, his intervention did not immediately calm the situation, with the verbal confrontation reportedly continuing as the number of people watching the incident grew.

Police officers subsequently spoke with people who had witnessed what happened and also made several requests to the motorcycle rider.

At the time of the report, there was no confirmation of arrests or sanctions resulting from the incident.

Residents have raised concerns about the square

The incident comes just days after concerns about Plaza Simón Bolívar and the surrounding area of Arrecife were made public.

A local resident recently complained about rubbish, public drinking and alleged drug use in the area, as well as noise and previous incidents of arguments and fighting. The resident also raised concerns about public urination and what they described as a lack of maintenance and enforcement.

These are residents’ complaints and allegations, rather than findings that have been independently confirmed in relation to every incident mentioned.

The latest confrontation has nevertheless renewed discussion about public safety, cleanliness and quality of life in Arrecife, particularly for people who live close to the square or regularly pass through the area.

A busy part of Arrecife

Simón Bolívar is an established public space within Arrecife, and the surrounding area has previously been the subject of municipal improvements. In 2022, Arrecife City Council announced plans for additional trees and improvements to the surroundings of the park as part of wider work on the city’s public green spaces.

For residents, the latest incident is therefore about more than one confrontation. It has added to an ongoing conversation about how public spaces in Lanzarote’s capital are maintained and managed, particularly during the evening.

For visitors to Arrecife, the incident should also be kept in perspective. It concerns a specific incident in one public square and does not mean that the city as a whole is unsafe. Arrecife remains a popular destination for tourists exploring Lanzarote, with its waterfront, historic centre, shops, restaurants and cultural attractions.

Police intervention brings incident under control

The arrival of the Policía Local de Arrecife brought the confrontation under control, with officers gathering information from people at the scene.

At present, there is no further confirmed information regarding arrests, injuries or any subsequent legal action connected with Friday night’s incident.

The situation will likely add to calls from some local residents for greater attention to cleanliness, policing and public spaces in Arrecife, particularly around areas where groups gather during the evening.
