Runaway Tyre Rolls Across Lanzarote Airport Tarmac, Prompting Investigation
A runaway tyre caused an unusual scene at Lanzarote Airport after it was spotted rolling freely across the airfield, with the incident captured on live webcam footage.
The incident took place on the night of Saturday, 11 July, and quickly attracted attention online after the footage was shared. The tyre can be seen travelling across part of the airport tarmac before eventually coming to a stop.
At present, it remains unclear where the tyre came from. Airport staff were seen responding to the situation, but there has been no official confirmation as to whether it became detached from an aircraft, an airport service vehicle, or another piece of ground equipment.
Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries, damage, or disruption to airport operations as a result of the incident. Flights at César Manrique–Lanzarote Airport continued to operate as normal.
Although unusual, incidents involving foreign objects or loose equipment on airport aprons are treated seriously due to the potential risks they can pose to aircraft and ground personnel. Airports have strict procedures in place to quickly remove any hazards from operational areas.
The footage, recorded by Lanzarote Webcams, has since been widely shared on social media, with many viewers expressing surprise at seeing a lone tyre rolling across one of the Canary Islands’ busiest airports.
The origin of the tyre is still unknown, and it is expected that airport authorities will review the incident to determine exactly how it came loose.
