Search for Missing Swimmer Ends in Tragedy at Puerto del Carmen Beach
A search operation at Los Pocillos beach in Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote, ended in tragedy on Wednesday afternoon after a tourist who had gone swimming was found deceased in the sea.
The emergency services were alerted at around 2:16pm after the man’s wife became concerned when she could no longer see him. She had told a beach lifeguard that her husband had gone swimming and had disappeared from view. The incident was reported in the area in front of the Hotel Jameos.
A major search operation was launched, with several emergency resources responding, including firefighters, Local Police and a helicopter. The helicopter eventually located the man in the water, allowing firefighters to reach and recover him from the sea. Sadly, he was pronounced dead.
The incident has brought a tragic end to what would otherwise have been a normal day at one of Puerto del Carmen’s most popular beaches. Los Pocillos is a long stretch of golden sand, measuring around 1.2 kilometres, and is a popular choice with both visitors and Lanzarote residents.
While Los Pocillos beach is known for generally calm bathing conditions and has facilities including lifeguard services, today’s incident is a reminder that conditions in the Atlantic can change and that anyone entering the sea should take care, follow local safety advice and pay attention to beach flags and lifeguard instructions.
For those visiting Lanzarote and Puerto del Carmen, the beach remains an important part of the resort, attracting thousands of people throughout the year. But today’s events serve as a sombre reminder that even familiar and well-used beaches are not without risk.
No more information relating to the circumstances surrounding the man’s death has been released at the time of writing.
Our thoughts and condolences are with the mans family and friends today.
