Strong Winds Cause Some Disruption Across Lanzarote Despite Hot Temperatures

Lanzarote weather continues to present a mixed picture today, with strong winds causing disruption across parts of the island while temperatures remain high in the main tourist resorts.

Many visitors staying in Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca have reported that the breeze is actually providing welcome relief from the heat. Despite the windy conditions, beaches, swimming pools and seafront promenades remain busy as holidaymakers make the most of the warm sunshine this weekend, and have been unaffected by the winds felt in other areas.

However, elsewhere on the island, the strong winds in Lanzarote have resulted in event cancellations and several weather-related incidents.

Sonidos Líquidos Festival Cancelled Due To Weather Conditions

One of the most significant impacts of today’s weather has been the cancellation of the Sonidos Líquidos Festival in La Geria.

Organisers made the decision to cancel the festival’s main event after wind gusts increased significantly, with forecasts suggesting conditions could worsen throughout the day. The decision was taken primarily for safety reasons, with concerns over staging, equipment and visitor welfare.

The cancellation is disappointing for both residents and tourists, as the festival is one of the island’s most popular cultural events and attracts visitors from across the Canary Islands and beyond.

Wind Damage Reported In Several Areas

The recent spell of windy weather resulted in a yellow weather alert this week and has also led to a number of incidents across Lanzarote.

Emergency services have responded to reports involving fallen branches, loose signs, displaced street furniture and minor damage to temporary structures. Some roads and public spaces have required attention as strong gusts carried debris into exposed areas.

Resorts Continue To Enjoy Summer Conditions

Visitors in Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca continue to enjoy warm temperatures, with many describing the breeze as a welcome alternative to the intense heat experienced earlier in the week.

Interestingly, a recent article we published about Lanzarote being placed under a yellow weather alert earlier in the week generated significant discussion on social media, with some readers claiming it was “fake news” because conditions in the resorts remained sunny, hot and seemingly unaffected.

However, this highlights one of Lanzarote’s unique weather characteristics. While coastal tourist areas can be enjoying blue skies and temperatures well above 30°C, conditions inland and at higher elevations can be dramatically different. Areas such as La Geria, Famara, Teguise and other exposed parts of the island often experience much stronger winds and more challenging conditions than those seen along the sheltered resort coastlines

Visitors Advised To Remain Cautious

As tourists are continuing to enjoy their holidays as normal, residents and visitors are being encouraged to exercise caution in exposed coastal and rural areas.

Loose outdoor items should be secured where possible, while extra care is advised when driving on exposed roads where strong crosswinds may be present.

For now, Lanzarote remains warm and sunny, but today’s event cancellations serve as a reminder that the island’s weather can differ significantly depending upon the location.
