Tías Invests Over €1.17 Million in New LED Street Lighting Project

The Municipality of Tías is investing more than €1.17 million in a major upgrade of public lighting in the La Candelaria area, with work already underway to replace older street lights with a modern, energy-efficient LED system.

The project forms part of the council’s wider commitment to improving public infrastructure while reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions.

What Is Changing?

The investment totals €1,176,663.83, funded by Tías Town Hall, and will see significant improvements across a number of streets and public spaces in La Candelaria.

The works include:

  • Replacing outdated high-pressure sodium street lights with modern LED lighting.
  • Installing 260 new LED luminaires, replacing the existing 123 sodium lamps.
  • New underground ducting and electrical cabling.
  • Installation of new lighting columns.
  • A new electrical control panel.
  • Improved lighting for roads, pavements and parking areas.

The improvements cover areas including:

  • Plaza de La Candelaria
  • Vista de Tías
  • Calle La Candelaria
  • Calle Talisca
  • Las Cuestas
  • Barranco del Puente
  • La Vega
  • Gabriel Díaz
  • Los Fajardo
  • Las Claras
  • Several surrounding roads, including part of the LZ-35 between Tías and San Bartolomé.

A Focus on Sustainability

According to the council, the new lighting system is expected to generate annual electricity savings of almost 19 MWh while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by around 7.6 tonnes every year.

Lower energy consumption should also reduce ongoing maintenance and operating costs, while providing brighter, more reliable lighting for residents and visitors.

Mayor José Juan Cruz Saavedra said the investment supports the municipality’s goals of improving energy efficiency, promoting sustainability and helping to reduce the effects of climate change.

What It Means for Residents and Visitors

Although visitors to Puerto del Carmen may not immediately notice the project, improving infrastructure in neighbouring Tías benefits the wider municipality.

Better street lighting can:

  • Improve visibility for drivers and pedestrians.
  • Increase safety during the evening.
  • Lower the council’s electricity consumption.
  • Modernise one of the municipality’s historic residential areas.

Visitors staying in Puerto del Carmen who explore inland villages such as Tías will eventually benefit from improved lighting when travelling after dark.

Continuing Investment Across the Municipality

This latest project follows previous investment in upgrading lighting in parts of Puerto del Carmen, where older street lights have already been replaced with more energy-efficient LED units. It also complements other ongoing infrastructure projects aimed at modernising services across the municipality.

As Lanzarote continues to balance tourism growth with environmental responsibility, projects like this demonstrate how local authorities are investing in infrastructure designed to improve everyday life while reducing long-term energy use.
