Three Dogs Left in Open Car Boot While Owner Goes Shopping in Arrecife
A situation involving three dogs left in the open boot of a car in Arrecife has prompted action from the Local Police and raised another reminder about responsible pet ownership in Lanzarote.
The incident happened around midday on Sunday, August 30, 2026, close to Open Mall Lanzarote, in the Valterra area of Arrecife.
According to information from La Voz de Lanzarote, the owner had parked in the former Hiperdino car park behind the shopping centre and left three dogs in the vehicle while going shopping.
The boot of the car was left open.
Local Police attend after dogs are spotted
Two officers from the Policía Local de Arrecife attended the vehicle after the dogs were noticed.
The officers remained with the car while attempting to locate the owner. According to the report, they were preparing to ask the shopping centre to make an announcement over its public-address system when the owner returned.
Police subsequently began proceedings for what was described as a minor infringement.
The owner was also warned that further incidents involving inappropriate treatment or care of the animals could potentially result in more serious consequences.
Why the incident matters for dog owners in Lanzarote
The case is particularly relevant because animal welfare legislation in Spain places clear responsibilities on people who look after companion animals.
Spain’s Law 7/2023 on the protection of animal rights and welfare states that people responsible for animals must treat them according to their status as sentient beings and provide living conditions that protect their welfare and healthy development.
The law also establishes different categories of administrative offences depending on the circumstances and consequences of an incident.
A minor infringement can include failing to comply with legally established care obligations where there is no physical harm or behavioural alteration to the animal. More serious classifications can apply where an animal suffers harm or where particular prohibited circumstances are involved.
The important point in this particular case is that the police proceedings do not mean that a serious or very serious offence was established. The report specifically describes the action taken as relating to a minor infringement.
Arrecife has its own animal regulations too
National legislation is not the only consideration for pet owners in the Lanzarote capital.
The Arrecife municipal ordinance on the keeping and protection of animals specifically classifies breaches concerning the transport and presence of animals in vehicles as minor administrative offences. It also refers to the obligation to maintain appropriate supervision and care of animals.
This provides useful local context to the police action reported in this case.
For residents and visitors, the wider message is straightforward: having a dog with you in Lanzarote does not remove the responsibility to ensure that the animal is safe and properly supervised.
Open Mall Lanzarote is pet friendly — but that doesn’t mean pets can be left unattended
Open Mall Lanzarote is officially a pet-friendly shopping centre, with pet-friendly facilities listed among its services. The centre is located on Calle León y Castillo in Arrecife and describes itself as an open shopping and leisure destination.
That makes the incident a useful reminder that being able to visit a shopping centre with your dog is very different from leaving animals unattended while you shop.
Open Mall’s official information also highlights its free parking and other facilities, while the centre’s published information gives its normal shopping hours as 10am to 10pm every day.
For dog owners visiting Arrecife shopping centres, checking individual pet policies before arriving is therefore worthwhile.
A reminder for tourists travelling with dogs in Lanzarote
Lanzarote is increasingly attractive to people travelling with pets, and there are plenty of outdoor areas, restaurants, accommodation providers and businesses that cater to dog owners.
But the island’s warm climate makes responsible planning particularly important.
If you’re visiting Lanzarote with a dog, don’t assume that leaving a pet in a vehicle is acceptable simply because the windows or boot are open. Conditions inside and around a parked vehicle can change quickly, and the safest option is to avoid leaving animals unattended whenever possible.
For tourists hiring a car in Lanzarote, the same principle applies as it does for residents: plan your shopping, sightseeing and excursions around the needs of your pets.
When taking dogs around Arrecife, Playa Honda, Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise or elsewhere on Lanzarote, owners remain responsible for their animals’ welfare, supervision and behaviour.
