Tourists Are Spending More in Lanzarote – But Where Is Their Money Actually Going?

Lanzarote is seeing visitors spend significantly more during their holidays, with accommodation and transport taking the biggest share of the average tourist budget.
The latest figures show that tourist spending in Lanzarote has risen sharply in 2026, even though visitor numbers have remained relatively stable.
During the second quarter of 2026, tourists in Lanzarote spent an average of €181.90 per person per day. That compares with €154.56 during the same period in 2025 – an increase of 17.7% in just one year.

So, where does the money go?

Of the average €181.90 spent each day, around €85.10 goes towards accommodation. That makes somewhere to stay the single biggest part of a visitor's daily expenditure, accounting for almost 47% of the total.
Transport is the next significant expense, representing approximately 24% of tourist spending. Restaurants account for around 11%, while the remaining 18% covers a range of other purchases and services.
In other words, accommodation and transport together account for roughly seven out of every ten euros spent by tourists in Lanzarote.

Lanzarote is attracting more valuable tourism

The latest figures are particularly interesting because visitor numbers have not increased anywhere near as quickly as spending.
Between January and July 2026, Lanzarote welcomed 2,034,207 tourists, compared with 2,019,794 during the same period in 2025. That represents growth of just 0.7%.
Yet daily tourist spending increased by almost 18% during the second quarter.
This suggests that Lanzarote's tourism economy is currently gaining more from the visitors who are already coming to the island, rather than simply relying on ever-increasing visitor numbers.

More money is also reaching the accommodation sector

The rise in tourist spending is being reflected in the island's accommodation industry.
Hotels, apartments and other tourist accommodation establishments generated approximately €607.1 million in revenue between January and July 2026. That compares with around €569 million during the same period in 2025 – an increase of approximately 6.7%.
The average daily accommodation rate has also risen. Between January and July, the average rate reached €130.60, compared with €122.47 in 2025, an increase of 6.64%.
For anyone living in or visiting Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise, Playa Blanca or other popular Lanzarote resorts, this helps put the changing cost of holidays into perspective.

Lanzarote remains one of the strongest tourism destinations in the Canary Islands

During the first quarter of 2026, Lanzarote recorded an average tourist expenditure of €198.64 per person per day, the highest figure among the Canary Islands at the time.
Although the second-quarter figure of €181.90 was lower than the first-quarter record, it was still substantially higher than the €154.56 recorded a year earlier.

What does this mean for local businesses?

Higher tourist spending can have a positive knock-on effect throughout the island.
Accommodation providers benefit directly, but tourists also spend money in Lanzarote restaurants, bars, supermarkets, shops, excursions, car hire companies, attractions and other local businesses.
Lanzarote does not necessarily need to attract substantially more tourists every year to generate additional economic activity if existing visitors are staying, spending and enjoying more of what the island has to offer.

A positive picture – but not the whole story

Tourism in Lanzarote operates in a highly competitive market, and holidaymakers are increasingly conscious of the overall cost of travelling.
Flights, accommodation, food and activities all form part of the final holiday bill, while factors such as inflation, air connectivity and international economic conditions can influence people's travel decisions.
For now, however, the latest statistics paint a positive picture.
Lanzarote is attracting roughly the same number of visitors, while generating considerably more spending from those visitors.
For residents, that spending supports employment and businesses across the island.
For holidaymakers, it provides another indication of how the cost of a Lanzarote holiday in 2026 is changing.
And for the tourism industry, the message is increasingly clear: visitor value may be becoming just as important as visitor numbers.
