Two people arrested after suspected drug landing on Lanzarote coast
Two people have been arrested in Lanzarote after arriving on the island in an inflatable boat, with the Guardia Civil later finding suspected drug bales along the nearby coastline.
The incident happened on the morning of Wednesday, 26 August, when the small inflatable vessel reached Lanzarote at around 7am.
The two occupants were subsequently rescued by Salvamento Marítimo. At that stage, no drugs were found aboard the boat itself. However, the situation took a different turn when Guardia Civil officers began searching the coastline around Los Ancones, in the municipality of Teguise.
During the search, officers discovered bales believed to contain drugs, leading to the arrest of the two people who had arrived on the island.
Investigation continues
The two individuals are reported to be of Moroccan origin and had reportedly indicated that they intended to request asylum after reaching Lanzarote. They have nevertheless been arrested by the Guardia Civil as alleged suspects in an offence against public health.
Authorities have not, according to the information currently available, released details of the type or quantity of drugs allegedly recovered. It is therefore too early to draw conclusions about the scale of the suspected operation.
The case remains subject to the ongoing investigation, and further information could be released as the Guardia Civil’s enquiries progress.
Another recent drug-related boat incident
The latest incident comes only weeks after another suspected drug-trafficking case attracted considerable attention in Lanzarote.
In July, a boat arriving at Arrieta was initially thought to be carrying migrants, but the four occupants were subsequently arrested over their alleged connection with drug trafficking. The incident took place in daylight and attracted attention from people in the area.
The two cases are separate incidents, but they highlight the continuing work of Spanish law-enforcement agencies in monitoring the Canary Islands coastline and maritime routes around Lanzarote.
