Two People Injured After Vehicle Overturns in Yaiza Following Road Traffic Accident

Two people were injured on Wednesday afternoon after a vehicle overturned in the municipality of Yaiza, prompting a response from the Canary Islands emergency services.

According to information released by the Canary Islands Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES) 1-1-2) and the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC), emergency crews were called to the scene on 12 August 2026 following reports of a vehicle that had overturned.

Emergency Services Respond Quickly

Ambulance crews, firefighters and local police attended the incident shortly after multiple emergency calls were received.

Medical personnel treated two occupants at the scene before transporting both to the Playa Blanca Local Health Centre for further assessment.

The casualties were reported as:

  • A 50-year-old man who suffered multiple moderate contusions.
  • A 21-year-old man who sustained mild neck pain.

Both patients were taken to the local health centre by basic life support ambulances, with neither reported to have life-threatening injuries.

Police Investigation Underway

Local Police attended the incident and completed the official accident report while firefighters assisted in making the scene safe.

At this stage, authorities have not released details about what caused the vehicle to overturn, and there is no indication that any other vehicles were involved.

Road Safety in Lanzarote

Although Lanzarote’s road network is generally considered safe, overturning accidents can happen unexpectedly due to driver error, excessive speed, distractions, road conditions or sudden manoeuvres.

Residents and visitors travelling around Yaiza and the south of the island are reminded to:

  • Drive within the speed limits.
  • Take extra care on bends and rural roads.
  • Avoid distractions while driving.
  • Always wear seatbelts.
  • Allow extra stopping distance during periods of strong wind or poor visibility.

Advice for Tourists Driving in Lanzarote

Many visitors choose to hire a car to explore attractions including Playa Blanca, Timanfaya National Park, El Golfo and Los Hervideros. If you’re unfamiliar with the island’s roads, take your time, particularly on winding sections and when encountering roundabouts.

Fortunately, in this incident, both injured occupants were able to receive prompt medical attention, highlighting the rapid response provided by Lanzarote’s emergency services.
