Two Vehicle Fires and a Brush Fire Keep Lanzarote Emergency Services Busy

Emergency services were called to several separate incidents across Lanzarote during the early hours of Friday, 7 August, with firefighters responding to two vehicle fires in Arrecife as well as a small vegetation fire near Los Cocoteros in the municipality of Teguise.

While no injuries have been reported, the incidents meant a busy morning for firefighters, police officers and emergency responders across the island.

First Vehicle Fire in Arrecife

The first call-out came shortly after dawn to Calle Trinquete in Arrecife, where a parked vehicle caught fire close to another parked bus.

Firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control. Due to the intensity of the fire, crews had to gain access by breaking one of the vehicle’s windows before extinguishing the flames and ensuring there was no risk of the fire spreading.

Second Fire Reported Just Hours Later

Only a few hours later, firefighters were called to a second vehicle in the Titerroy area of Arrecife after smoke was seen coming from another car.

Fortunately, this second incident was discovered at an early stage, allowing emergency crews to extinguish the fire before it became fully involved. Police also attended both incidents as part of their investigations.

Brush Fire Near Los Cocoteros

Separately, firefighters also dealt with a small brush fire near Los Cocoteros, in the municipality of Teguise.

The vegetation fire was brought under control, preventing it from spreading further during the island’s dry summer conditions.

Investigations Continue

At this stage, officials have not confirmed the causes of the fires, and investigations are continuing.

Recent months have seen a number of separate vehicle and container fires in parts of Arrecife, with police investigating several incidents and, in some cases, making arrests where fires were believed to have been started deliberately. Authorities have not indicated that these latest incidents are linked to any previous cases.

Advice for Residents and Visitors

Although vehicle fires remain relatively uncommon, both residents and visitors can reduce risks by:

  • Reporting smoke or flames immediately by calling 112.
  • Never ignoring the smell of burning or electrical faults in a vehicle.
  • Keeping clear of any vehicle fire, as tyres, fuel and batteries can become hazardous.
  • Following instructions from the emergency services if roads or nearby areas are temporarily closed.

As always, Lanzarote’s emergency services responded quickly to minimise damage and keep the public safe.
