Van catches fire on LZ-40 near Puerto del Carmen
A morning journey along the LZ-40 near Puerto del Carmen was interrupted on Saturday, 19 September, when a van caught fire while travelling on the road in the municipality of Tías.
According to information released following the emergency response, the incident was reported to the emergency coordination service (CECOES) at around 6:55am. Firefighters from the Lanzarote Security and Emergencies Consortium attended and found the van burning at the front of the vehicle.
The firefighters tackled the flames with water before using foam inside the vehicle to help make sure the fire was fully extinguished and reduce the possibility of it reigniting.
There is no indication in the available reports that anyone was injured in this particular incident. The published emergency information also does not give a confirmed cause for the fire.
The LZ-40 is an important road for both Lanzarote residents and visitors. It links the airport area with Puerto del Carmen and carries substantial traffic, making incidents on the route particularly relevant to people travelling between Lanzarote Airport, Puerto del Carmen, Matagorda, Tías and other parts of the island.
For tourists hiring a car in Lanzarote, incidents such as this are also a reminder of the importance of staying alert to changes in traffic conditions. If you come across a vehicle fire or another roadside emergency, slow down safely, keep a suitable distance from the incident and follow instructions from emergency personnel or police. Do not stop in a way that blocks access for fire engines or other emergency vehicles.
This latest Lanzarote road incident follows another vehicle fire reported in the area within a short period. On Friday evening, a separate vehicle was reported to have caught fire while travelling near Mácher. That incident was attended by emergency services after the driver noticed flames from the engine and was able to stop and get out safely.
