Yaiza Calls on Lanzarote Supermarkets to Help Stop Plastic Waste Reaching the Sea
Yaiza Ayuntamiento has asked supermarkets in the municipality to take additional steps to prevent plastic bags and disposable gloves from being blown into the streets, countryside and coastline.
The request comes after concerns about lightweight plastic waste accumulating around supermarkets, particularly in Playa Blanca, where strong winds can quickly turn discarded bags and gloves into a much wider environmental problem.
A simple problem made worse by Lanzarote’s wind
Anyone who lives in or regularly visits Lanzarote knows just how quickly the island’s wind can move lightweight objects.
According to the Yaiza Ayuntamiento, plastic bags and single-use gloves left around supermarket entrances, car parks and shopping trolleys can easily be picked up by the wind and carried into green areas, ravines and public roads.
There is also concern that some of this waste could eventually make its way towards the sea.
The municipality has therefore written to supermarkets asking them to consider measures that would help prevent this type of plastic pollution in Lanzarote.
One suggestion is the installation of outdoor bins with heavy or secure lids around supermarket entrances and parking areas. The idea is to stop lightweight rubbish escaping once it has been thrown away.
The council has also made it clear that supermarkets could introduce other measures if they believe they would be more effective.
Playa Blanca is a particular focus
The problem has been highlighted particularly around supermarkets in Playa Blanca, one of Lanzarote’s busiest tourist resorts.
With thousands of residents and visitors shopping in the resort throughout the year, supermarket areas can generate significant amounts of lightweight waste.
While a plastic bag or disposable glove might appear insignificant when viewed individually, the combination of wind and large numbers of people can result in rubbish spreading well beyond the original location.
This is particularly important in Lanzarote, where protecting the island’s natural landscape and coastline is a major priority.
The council is also asking shoppers to play their part
Yaiza’s request isn’t aimed solely at supermarkets.
The Ayuntamiento is also appealing directly to consumers to take more care with plastic bags and disposable gloves after shopping.
One of the simplest requests is not to leave bags or gloves inside shopping trolleys.
When these items are abandoned in a trolley outside a supermarket, they remain exposed to Lanzarote’s wind and can quickly become litter elsewhere.
Returning unwanted bags and gloves to an appropriate bin takes only a few seconds but could prevent them from ending up in the environment.
Why plastic pollution matters in Lanzarote
Lanzarote’s volcanic landscape is one of the reasons so many people choose to visit the island.
From the volcanic scenery around Timanfaya to the beaches and coastline around Playa Blanca, Yaiza and the rest of the island, the natural environment is an important part of what makes Lanzarote special.
Plastic waste doesn’t simply look unsightly. Once lightweight rubbish escapes into the environment, it can be difficult to recover.
A bag blown into a field can travel further with every gust of wind, while waste entering a ravine can eventually be carried towards the coast.
For an island that attracts visitors because of its scenery, beaches and outdoor lifestyle, keeping plastic waste under control is particularly important.
This isn’t a new supermarket ban
It is worth stressing that the announcement from Yaiza Ayuntamiento is a request for action rather than the introduction of a new supermarket ban.
The council is asking large retailers to consider practical measures to prevent plastic bags and disposable gloves from escaping into the environment.
The proposed solution could be as straightforward as better-positioned outdoor bins with heavier lids, although supermarkets are free to consider other ways of tackling the problem.
The initiative is therefore about prevention rather than punishment.
Protecting Lanzarote for the future
The appeal of Lanzarote goes far beyond its sunshine and beaches. Its volcanic landscapes, coastline, rural areas and unique natural environment are a huge part of what makes the island different from many other holiday destinations.
The request from Yaiza Ayuntamiento is a reminder that Lanzarote environmental protection is everyone’s responsibility.
For supermarkets, that could mean finding better ways to contain lightweight waste.
For residents, it could mean being more careful about what is left behind.
And for tourists, it is simply another opportunity to enjoy Lanzarote while helping to look after the island.
A plastic bag left in a shopping trolley might seem like a very small thing. But on a windy Lanzarote day, it can travel a surprisingly long way.
