Yellow Heat Warning Issued for Lanzarote This Weekend as Temperatures Could Reach 37°C

Residents and visitors in Lanzarote are being urged to prepare for a spell of very hot weather this weekend after Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) issued a yellow weather warning for high temperatures.

The warning marks the first official heat alert of the current heatwave for Lanzarote and La Graciosa, with inland parts of the island expected to experience the highest temperatures.

When is the heat warning in place?

According to AEMET, the yellow warning is expected to be in force:

  • Saturday: 11:00am to 8:00pm
  • Sunday: 11:00am to 8:00pm

While many coastal resorts will remain slightly cooler thanks to sea breezes, temperatures are forecast to climb significantly across inland municipalities, with some areas potentially seeing up to 37°C by Sunday afternoon.

Which parts of Lanzarote will be hottest?

The highest temperatures are expected in:

  • San Bartolomé
  • Tinajo
  • Teguise inland areas
  • Interior parts of Yaiza
  • Parts of the south-east of the island

Popular tourist resorts such as Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca and Costa Teguise may still feel extremely warm, although coastal breezes should help keep temperatures slightly below those recorded inland.

Heatwave continues across the Canary Islands

Lanzarote has largely escaped official weather warnings during the first few days of the Canary Islands heatwave. However, forecasts have now prompted AEMET to extend yellow alerts to the island as the hottest air moves across the archipelago.

Meteorologists say the current weather pattern is expected to bring prolonged periods of high temperatures, particularly during the middle of the day and early evening.

Advice for tourists and residents

Whether you’re on holiday or live in Lanzarote, it’s worth taking extra precautions during the hottest hours.

Authorities recommend:

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise between 11am and 6pm where possible.
  • Stay in the shade or indoors during the hottest part of the afternoon.
  • Wear light, loose-fitting clothing and a hat.
  • Apply high-factor sunscreen regularly.
  • Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles.
  • Check on elderly relatives or neighbours who may be vulnerable to the heat.

Planning outdoor activities?

If you’re heading to the beaches, Timanfaya National Park, hiking trails or outdoor attractions this weekend, consider starting early in the morning or waiting until later in the evening when temperatures begin to ease.

Even if you’re accustomed to Lanzarote’s warm climate, prolonged exposure during a heatwave can increase the risk of dehydration and heat exhaustion.

Stay updated

Weather forecasts can change quickly during heatwave conditions. Visitors and residents are advised to keep an eye on the latest AEMET forecasts and any updated weather warnings before making outdoor plans.
