Yellow Wind Warning for Lanzarote as Strong Gusts Expected This Sunday

Lanzarote is set for a windy end to the weekend, with AEMET issuing a yellow weather warning for strong winds across the island on Sunday afternoon.

Residents and visitors to Lanzarote are being advised to take extra care as strong winds and gusts of up to 70 km/h are expected from around 4pm on Sunday, 6 September.

The warning comes as the trade winds strengthen across the Canary Islands, with the most exposed areas of Lanzarote likely to experience the strongest conditions.

Wind warning comes into force this afternoon

According to the latest information from Spain’s national weather agency AEMET, Lanzarote is under a yellow-level warning for wind from 4pm on Sunday, with maximum gusts potentially reaching 70 km/h.

The strongest winds are expected to be particularly noticeable in exposed and inland areas, with the island’s southern areas among those highlighted by the authorities.

The Government of the Canary Islands has also placed Lanzarote under a pre-alert for wind, warning of moderate to strong trade winds and locally very strong gusts, particularly in exposed areas and during Sunday.

What does this mean for tourists in Lanzarote?

For most visitors, a yellow weather warning does not mean that normal holiday activities need to stop. However, the wind could make some outdoor activities considerably less comfortable.

Those planning to spend the afternoon at the beach should be aware that strong winds can blow sand around, while parasols, inflatables and other lightweight items can become difficult to control.

Anyone hiring a car should also take extra care, particularly when driving across exposed stretches of Lanzarote where crosswinds can occasionally become quite powerful.

Cyclists, motorcyclists and people taking part in outdoor activities should also check conditions before setting off.

Check conditions before heading to the coast

Interestingly, the latest AEMET beach forecast for El Reducto in Arrecife shows stronger winds on Sunday afternoon but only weak wave conditions at that particular beach. The forecast currently shows conditions becoming calmer on Monday, with moderate winds rather than the Sunday warning conditions.

Conditions can vary considerably around Lanzarote, however, particularly because of the island’s geography. A sheltered beach can feel very different from an exposed coastline.

Visitors heading to coastal areas, particularly for swimming, snorkelling, fishing or water sports, should therefore check the latest local conditions before entering the water.

A hot and windy September in Lanzarote

The wind is arriving alongside typically warm September conditions. AEMET’s current forecast for Arrecife puts Sunday’s maximum temperature at around 30°C, rising to approximately 33°C on Monday and 35°C on Tuesday.

The combination of high temperatures, sunshine and strong wind can sometimes make conditions feel deceptively comfortable, so sun protection and keeping hydrated remain important.

There is also an ongoing pre-alert for calima affecting Lanzarote and La Graciosa, with authorities advising people to take precautions if visibility deteriorates.

When will the wind ease?

The current forecast suggests that Monday should be calmer than Sunday, although moderate winds will remain. By Tuesday, AEMET is forecasting lighter winds during the morning before they become moderate again later in the day.

Weather warnings can change as conditions develop, so residents and tourists in Lanzarote are advised to check the latest AEMET and Canary Islands emergency information before making plans.

For now, the key message is simple: Lanzarote remains warm and sunny, but if you’re heading out this Sunday afternoon, be prepared for some very strong gusts.
