Yellow Wind Warning Issued for Lanzarote as Gusts of Up to 70 km/h Forecast

Visitors and residents in Lanzarote are being advised to prepare for strong winds after Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) issued a yellow weather warning covering parts of the island.

The warning comes as gusts of up to 70 km/h are expected, particularly across the southern slopes and more exposed inland areas, where the northeast trade winds are forecast to strengthen throughout Wednesday and into Thursday.

What the Yellow Weather Warning Means

A yellow warning is AEMET’s lowest official weather alert level, but it still indicates that weather conditions could pose a risk, particularly for vulnerable people and outdoor activities.

While most daily life can continue as normal, residents and tourists should take extra care if:

  • Walking near cliffs or exposed coastal paths.
  • Driving high-sided vehicles or motorhomes.
  • Taking part in water sports such as windsurfing, kitesurfing or paddleboarding.
  • Using rooftop terraces, parasols or outdoor furniture that could be affected by strong gusts.

Loose objects on balconies and gardens should also be secured before the strongest winds arrive.

Hot Weather Continues

Despite the strengthening winds, Lanzarote’s summer heat is expected to continue, with inland parts of the island potentially exceeding 34°C, particularly in southern and southeastern areas. Clear skies are forecast for most of the period, although some cloud may develop in northern municipalities.

Travel and Airport Information

At present, there are no widespread reports of flight disruption at César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport. However, strong crosswinds can occasionally affect aircraft operations, particularly during take-off and landing. Travellers are advised to monitor their airline for any schedule updates if conditions worsen.

Ferry passengers should also keep an eye on operator announcements, especially if travelling between Lanzarote and La Graciosa, where rougher sea conditions can sometimes affect sailings.

Safety Advice

If you’re spending time outdoors during the warning period:

  • Secure loose outdoor furniture and umbrellas.
  • Be cautious when opening vehicle doors in exposed locations.
  • Avoid parking beneath trees or unstable structures.
  • Keep children away from large waves along exposed coastlines.
  • Follow any advice issued by local authorities or emergency services.

Summary

Although a yellow wind alert is not unusual during the Canary Islands’ windy season, gusts approaching 70 km/h can still create hazardous conditions in exposed areas. Anyone planning beach visits, hiking, cycling or water sports should check the latest weather forecast before setting out.

Residents and holidaymakers are encouraged to stay informed while the warning remains in effect.
