262 People Assisted From Four Boats During Overnight Maritime Operation

Lanzarote saw an intense overnight maritime rescue operation as four boats carrying a total of 262 people were assisted in waters around the island, according to information reported on 24 September 2026 by emergency services and agencies including EFE and RTVC.

The operation took place between Wednesday evening and the early hours of Thursday morning, with Salvamento Marítimo coordinating several rescues before the people aboard the boats were brought to Arrecife.

Four boats assisted off Lanzarote

The first operation was carried out at around 19:05 on Wednesday, when the Salvamar Acrux went to the aid of a boat located around 60 nautical miles from Lanzarote. Seventy-seven people were aboard, according to the emergency information reported by EFE.

Later during the night, the Guardamar Urania and the Las Palmas Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre coordinated the rescue of three further boats. They were located approximately 53 nautical miles northeast of Arrecife.

The three boats were carrying 97, 42 and 46 people respectively, giving a combined total of 185 people. Together with the earlier rescue of 77 people, the four Lanzarote operations involved 262 people.

Arrival at Arrecife

The 185 people rescued during the later operation were taken to the port of Arrecife, arriving shortly after 05:30 on Thursday morning.

Once ashore, people arriving in Lanzarote through these maritime rescue operations are subject to the established reception, identification and assistance procedures. Cruz Roja and other emergency and support services can be involved in the initial response.

What is a patera?

The term 'patera' is commonly used in Spain when referring to small or makeshift boats used to attempt irregular sea crossings. The Canary Islands are situated on an Atlantic migration route from parts of West Africa, and maritime crossings can involve long distances and difficult sea conditions.

For residents and visitors in Lanzarote, these arrivals normally take place away from the main tourist areas and are handled by the relevant emergency, maritime rescue, police and reception services.

A wider picture in the Canary Islands

The Lanzarote operation formed part of wider maritime activity in the Canary Islands. EFE reported that, during the same period, another 167 people were assisted near El Hierro, bringing the combined number of people involved in five separate boat rescues in the islands to 429.

Recent arrivals have once again highlighted the demanding work carried out by Salvamento Marítimo crews, emergency coordinators, police, Cruz Roja volunteers and healthcare personnel across the Canary Islands.

For Lanzarote residents and tourists, it is important to distinguish these maritime rescue operations from normal day-to-day activity on the island. The people involved are processed through the relevant authorities and reception systems following arrival, before being transferred to reception centre's normally on other Canary Island or in Mainland Spain. Despite arrival numbers falling by 55% in 2026, the Atlantic route is still considered active and being closely monitored.
