A long-awaited upgrade for a busy Lanzarote route

Drivers travelling between Arrecife and Costa Teguise could eventually benefit from a substantial improvement to the LZ-18, also associated with Avenida de las Palmeras. The Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa has launched a tender for a comprehensive renovation project with a budget of €4,958,633.34, including taxes.

The road is an important connection for residents, commuters, local businesses and visitors heading to and from Costa Teguise. The planned work is intended to address deterioration that has built up over time, rather than simply deal with isolated patches.

What work is planned?

The project includes resurfacing the road and correcting uneven sections between the carriageways. The tender documents also cover repairs to cracks in the road surface and raised areas linked to the roots of roadside palm trees.

Road safety features are also included. The plans provide for improvements to road markings, signs and visibility measures, alongside work involving pavements, road-protection features and retaining walls where required. Irrigation and landscaping networks are also part of the project, reflecting the palm-lined approach to Costa Teguise.

Tender deadline and expected timescale

According to reports published on 28–29 October 2026, interested companies have until 9:00 a.m. on 24 November 2026 to submit bids. The stated construction period is seven months from the start of the works. This is not a confirmed completion date: the tender process, award of the contract and the eventual start date will determine when work begins and when it is finished.

What does this mean for residents and tourists?

Once the project moves into construction, motorists may need to allow extra time for journeys between Arrecife and Costa Teguise if temporary traffic arrangements or work zones are introduced. Visitors collecting hire cars, travelling to accommodation or planning airport transfers should check local traffic information before setting off, particularly during busy periods.

The aim of the investment is to provide a smoother, clearer and more reliable route for people using this busy part of Lanzarote. However, the tender announcement alone does not confirm the precise work schedule, lane restrictions or any diversions. Those details should be checked against updates from the Cabildo once the contract has been awarded and works are scheduled.

A key connection for the island

The LZ-18 improvement plan is a significant infrastructure proposal for Lanzarote, addressing road-surface condition as well as signage, pedestrian facilities and landscaping. For local residents, the priority will be

safer and more comfortable everyday journeys; for tourists, the benefit should be a better-maintained route between the island’s capital and one of its best-known holiday resorts once the work is complete.
