Air Conditioning Unit Suspected in Early Morning Playa Blanca House Fire
A house fire in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote, during the early hours of Tuesday morning is believed to have been caused by a portable air conditioning unit, according to initial findings from emergency services.
The incident happened at around 3:30am at a property on Calle Austria, in the Faro Pechiguera area of Yaiza. Emergency services, including firefighters, Local Police, the Civil Guard and the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC), responded after reports of a fire inside one of the rooms of the property.
Fortunately, everyone inside the house had managed to get out safely before firefighters arrived. One of the occupants had already succeeded in bringing the flames under control, helping to prevent the fire from spreading further through the property.
Portable Air Conditioning Unit Believed to Be the Cause
Following an inspection, firefighters concluded that the fire may have originated from a portable air conditioning unit, which was found to have been completely destroyed.
Although the main fire was quickly extinguished, smoke spread throughout much of the property. Fire crews ventilated the house before advising the family not to remain inside until it had been professionally cleaned and declared safe.
As with many incidents of this nature, the exact cause will be subject to the appropriate investigations, but early indications point towards an electrical fault involving the portable cooling unit.
With temperatures remaining high across Lanzarote, many residents and holidaymakers rely on portable air conditioning units and cooling appliances, particularly overnight.
While incidents like this are uncommon, experts generally recommend:
- Using air conditioning units according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Avoiding overloaded extension leads or multi-plug adapters.
- Ensuring vents remain unobstructed to prevent overheating.
- Switching appliances off if they show signs of damage or unusual smells.
- Keeping electrical equipment well maintained.
No Injuries Reported
Thankfully, no injuries have been reported, and the quick actions of those inside the property, combined with the rapid response from the emergency services, helped prevent what could have become a far more serious incident.
