Airplane Etiquette: The In-Flight Habits That Annoy Passengers Most
A new travel survey has revealed that nearly half of Spanish travellers have been irritated by the behaviour of fellow passengers during a flight, highlighting the importance of showing consideration when sharing the confined space of an aircraft.
According to the study, carried out by Booking.com, 46% of Spaniards say they have been annoyed by another passenger’s behaviour while flying. More than half of those surveyed believe many travellers forget that an aircraft is a shared environment, although interestingly 62% admitted they often behave much as they would at home while on board.
The biggest source of frustration? Passengers leaning over others to take the perfect photograph out of the window, with 46% of respondents saying this was the most irritating habit.
Close behind was bringing food with strong smells or meals that create a mess, something that 42% of those surveyed found particularly unpleasant during a flight.
Entertainment without consideration also ranked highly. Watching videos or listening to music without headphones was named as the third most annoying behaviour, cited by 41% of respondents.
Another common complaint was removing shoes during the flight, with more than a third of travellers saying they would rather fellow passengers kept their footwear on.
Privacy concerns also featured in the survey, with many people expressing discomfort at appearing in photos or videos for social media without their permission. Other grooming habits, including painting, filing or cutting nails during a flight, were also viewed negatively by a significant number of respondents.
The findings serve as a reminder that while flying can sometimes be stressful, small acts of courtesy can make the journey more enjoyable for everyone on board. Being mindful of personal space, keeping noise to a minimum, avoiding disruptive behaviour and respecting fellow passengers’ privacy can all help create a more pleasant travel experience.
