Around 50 People Attend Anti-Sánchez Protest Near La Mareta in Lanzarote
A political demonstration organised by the conservative campaign group Hazte Oír took place near La Mareta on Thursday 6th August at the official state residence in Costa Teguise where Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is spending part of his summer holiday.
According to reports, around 50 people attended the protest, which followed several campaign activities carried out across Lanzarote during the previous 24 hours.
Posters and Political Messages Across Lanzarote
Before the demonstration, campaigners displayed life-sized images of Pedro Sánchez and his wife, Begoña Gómez, alongside political slogans criticising the Spanish Government. Similar posters were also placed at the PSOE headquarters in Arrecife and at other locations around the island.
Reports also state that graffiti containing references to several ongoing political investigations linked to members of the Spanish Government appeared near La Mareta. Authorities have not publicly linked those markings to any individual or confirmed who was responsible.
What Was the Protest About?
The demonstration was organised by Hazte Oír, a Spanish conservative advocacy group that has been openly critical of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and his government.
Those taking part said they were protesting over what they describe as concerns about political accountability, alleged corruption involving individuals close to the government, and several ongoing judicial investigations that have attracted national attention. The group has also criticised a number of government policies and decisions during Sánchez’s time in office.
The Spanish Government has denied wrongdoing, and while several investigations involving people connected to the Prime Minister’s political circle remain ongoing, no court has found Pedro Sánchez personally guilty of any criminal offence.
The gathering in Lanzarote formed part of a wider campaign that Hazte Oír has organised during the Prime Minister’s summer stay on the island.
Demonstration Outside La Mareta
The protest took place outside La Mareta, the government-owned residence that is regularly used by senior Spanish officials during official visits and holidays in Lanzarote.
The gathering remained relatively small, with media estimates putting attendance at approximately 50 people. Protesters carried banners and chanted slogans criticising the Prime Minister and his administration, while police monitored the event to ensure it remained peaceful.
A Repeat of Last Year’s Campaign
This is not the first time Hazte Oír has staged protests in Lanzarote while Pedro Sánchez has been staying on the island.
During his previous visit, the organisation attracted attention by placing politically themed umbrellas on beaches in Costa Teguise and Papagayo. The campaign generated controversy after some of the umbrellas reportedly ended up in the sea, prompting criticism from environmental groups and local residents.
Why This Matters to Residents and Visitors
Although the protest attracted national media attention, it was a political demonstration linked to the Prime Minister’s holiday rather than an event affecting everyday life on the island.
For tourists visiting Costa Teguise, Arrecife, or other parts of Lanzarote, there is little reason for concern. The protest was limited to the area around La Mareta, and the island’s beaches, attractions, restaurants, shops and tourist facilities have continued to operate as normal.
As one of Spain’s most popular holiday destinations, Lanzarote remains open and welcoming to visitors, with this event representing an isolated political gathering rather than widespread disruption.
