Arrecife Keeps El Reducto Beach Closed Despite Positive Water Tests

Visitors and residents hoping to return to El Reducto Beach in Arrecife will have to wait a little longer, as local authorities have decided to keep the beach closed as a precaution, despite the latest water quality tests showing encouraging results.

The popular Lanzarote beach, which has been closed to swimmers since 28 July, was shut after sewage contamination was detected near the Punta del Camello outfall. Since then, several investigations and water quality tests have been carried out to determine whether it is safe to reopen.

Why Is El Reducto Still Closed?

According to Arrecife City Council, the most recent laboratory analysis carried out by Public Health did not detect current faecal contamination in the bathing water. However, officials have chosen to wait for an additional set of water samples before lifting the swimming ban.

The decision has been described as a precautionary measure to ensure the water remains consistently safe before allowing the public back into the sea. Authorities are expected to review the latest test results before making a final decision on reopening.

Ongoing Investigations Continue

While the latest results are positive, technicians from the Lanzarote Water Consortium have continued inspecting the sewer network in the area around El Reducto.

Investigations have focused on:

  • Checking for possible leaks or cracks in the wastewater system.
  • Inspecting pumping stations serving the area.
  • Determining whether the contamination originated near Punta del Camello or elsewhere in the sewer network.

Officials want to identify the exact cause of the sewage discharge to help prevent similar incidents in the future.

A Beach That Has Faced Repeated Closures

This is not the first time El Reducto Beach has been affected by water quality issues. The beach was also closed for several months between late 2025 and early 2026 due to previous contamination incidents.

The latest closure has once again highlighted concerns surrounding parts of Arrecife’s ageing wastewater infrastructure and the importance of regular environmental monitoring.

Advice for Tourists and Residents

If you’re staying in Lanzarote or planning a visit to Arrecife, it’s important to continue following official beach flags and local notices.

Until authorities confirm the water is consistently safe:

  • Swimming at El Reducto Beach remains prohibited.
  • Nearby beaches around Lanzarote remain open unless otherwise indicated.
  • Visitors should always check the latest beach conditions before heading out.

The City Council is expected to announce whether El Reducto can safely reopen once the newest laboratory results have been reviewed.
