Arrecife Mayor Announces Possible Legal Action Over Social Media Comments

Arrecife mayor Yonathan de León says he will seek legal advice after comments about his wife and family were published on social media.

The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, has announced that he is referring a series of social media comments involving his wife and family to legal advisers.

The development comes after the mayor publicly shared screenshots of comments posted on an open social media platform. According to reports, the individual believed to have published the messages has already been identified.

De León says the issue has gone beyond criticism of his work as a politician and has instead involved comments about his private life and members of his family.

Mayor says criticism is part of political life

In his statement, De León acknowledged that people are entitled to question his decisions and criticise his performance as Arrecife mayor.

However, he drew a distinction between political criticism and comments directed at relatives who do not hold public positions.

The mayor says the material has been documented and will now be examined by his legal services to establish whether any legal action is appropriate, including measures relating to the protection of honour and privacy.

The comments reportedly include derogatory remarks and insinuations concerning the mayor’s wife and aspects of the family’s private life.

Social media comments reportedly continued for months

The latest reports indicate that the comments were not necessarily an isolated incident. According to local reporting, similar references involving the mayor’s family had allegedly appeared over a period of several months.

The person behind the posts has reportedly been identified, although the announcement from the mayor does not mean that any offence has been legally established. Any potential legal consequences would depend on an assessment of the evidence and, if necessary, the relevant authorities and courts.

For now, the matter is being passed to the mayor’s legal advisers for consideration.

A busy period for Arrecife politics

The announcement comes during an already significant period for Arrecife politics and Lanzarote local government.

Earlier this month, the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office in Las Palmas filed a complaint against De León and Arrecife councillor Echedey Eugenio over alleged irregularities relating to the contracting of several municipal events. The case concerns events including Navilan, the 2024 Carnival and the Feria de Abril, with further investigations requested into other events.

De León has said he will cooperate with the judicial process and has maintained that ongoing legal proceedings will not stop the work of Arrecife Town Hall.

The two issues are separate, however, and the latest announcement concerning social media comments relates specifically to alleged attacks involving the mayor’s wife and family.

Respect for public figures and their families

The situation highlights a wider issue surrounding the use of social media to discuss public figures in Lanzarote.

Politicians and other public figures can expect a significant level of scrutiny, particularly when decisions affect residents and businesses. However, criticism of someone’s political role and comments concerning their relatives are separate matters.

The mayor’s decision to seek legal advice means the next stage will be to establish whether the published material potentially gives rise to any legal action.

For residents of Arrecife, the story is another example of how local political issues can quickly move from the town hall and political debate onto social media.

What happens next?

At this stage, there has been no announcement of a court ruling or confirmed legal proceedings arising from the social media comments.

The material is being handed to legal advisers, who will assess the circumstances and determine what options may be available.
