Arrest in Arrecife After Violent Mobile Phone Robbery Involving Knife Attack

A man has been arrested in Arrecife following an alleged violent robbery in which a victim was headbutted several times before the attacker reportedly tried to slash him with a knife.

Police in Lanzarote have arrested a man in connection with a violent mobile phone robbery in Arrecife, after an investigation into an incident that happened in the early hours of 20 August.

According to information released about the case, the suspect allegedly approached another man with the intention of stealing his mobile phone. What followed was a violent confrontation that left the victim with facial injuries and a fractured nose.

Victim allegedly attacked during phone robbery

Police say the victim was subjected to several headbutts during the assault.

The blows caused injuries to his face, including a fractured nose, before the attacker allegedly produced a bladed weapon and attempted to strike him in the thigh.

The victim managed to avoid being directly struck by the weapon. However, the knife reportedly caught his clothing and tore his trousers.

Despite the violent confrontation, the alleged attacker was able to take the victim’s mobile phone before leaving the area.

The victim subsequently required medical attention for the injuries he sustained.

Police investigation identifies suspect

The investigation was carried out by officers from the Specialised and Violent Crime Unit at the National Police station in Arrecife.

Following their enquiries, officers identified the man they believed was responsible.

Police said the suspect was already known locally and had numerous previous police records. According to the information released, he had also been arrested four times earlier in 2026 in connection with alleged offences involving people and property.

The man was eventually located and arrested on 31 August.

Following his arrest, police carried out the necessary investigative procedures before the suspect was made available to the judicial authorities. A formal identification procedure was subsequently carried out at court.

A judge then ordered that the man be remanded in prison.

A reminder for visitors and residents in Lanzarote

Although incidents such as this can understandably cause concern, a violent robbery of this nature should not be taken as representative of everyday life for the vast majority of people living in or visiting Lanzarote.

Arrecife is the island’s capital and is a busy urban centre used by local residents, workers and visitors throughout the year. As with other towns and cities, sensible precautions can help reduce the chances of becoming a victim of opportunistic theft.

For tourists exploring Arrecife, Lanzarote, keeping expensive phones and other valuables secure is particularly sensible in busy public areas.

Visitors should also avoid leaving mobile phones, cameras, wallets or other valuables unattended in cars or in easily accessible bags.

What should you do if your phone is stolen in Lanzarote?

If you become the victim of a theft or robbery while visiting Lanzarote, getting somewhere safe should be your first priority.

If there has been violence or a threat involving a weapon, contact the emergency services and report the incident to the police.

Spain’s Fiscalía advises victims of crime that reports can be made to the Police, Guardia Civil, a duty court or the local public prosecutor’s office.

It is also sensible to keep your phone’s identifying information, such as its IMEI number, somewhere separate from the device itself. Travel insurance documentation and receipts can also be useful if a valuable phone or other property is stolen.

Arrecife police continue investigating crime in the capital

The latest case comes amid other recent reports involving crime and public safety in Arrecife and across Lanzarote.

For residents and tourists alike, the important message is not to become unnecessarily alarmed but to remain aware of your surroundings and take ordinary precautions with phones, wallets and other valuables.

Anyone who witnesses a crime or becomes a victim should report it rather than attempting to confront an offender themselves.

The man arrested in this case is described as a suspected perpetrator. An arrest and subsequent court decision are not, by themselves, the same as a criminal conviction.
