BONO ALQUILER JOVEN CANARIAS 2026: UP TO €250 A MONTH FOR YOUNG RENTERS IN LANZAROTE

Young people renting a home in Lanzarote and elsewhere in the Canary Islands can now apply for a new round of the Bono Alquiler Joven, offering up to €250 a month towards rent.

Applications open on Friday 18 September 2026 and close on Thursday 8 October 2026. The application period is 15 working days, and the Canary Islands Government recommends applying online through its electronic headquarters.

WHAT IS THE BONO ALQUILER JOVEN?

The Bono Alquiler Joven is a direct rental assistance scheme designed to help young people with limited incomes meet the cost of their main home or rented room.

For eligible applicants, the assistance is €250 per month, for up to 24 months. That means the maximum support can reach €6,000 over the two-year period.

The 2026 Canary Islands call has a total budget of €12.878 million. It includes funding from the Spanish Ministry of Housing as well as contributions connected with the island governments. For Lanzarote and La Graciosa, €378,000 in unused funds from the 2025 call has been incorporated into the 2026 programme.

WHO CAN APPLY?

The scheme is aimed at people aged 18 to 35. Applicants must be at least 18 and must not be older than 35 when the application is submitted.

Applicants must have Spanish, EU/EEA or Swiss nationality, or, where applicable, legal status in Spain for non-EU nationals.

They must also be renting, or be in a position to sign, a qualifying rental or use-of-home agreement in the Canary Islands. A rented room can also qualify.

The rented property or room must be the applicant's habitual and permanent home. This is important for anyone wondering whether the scheme applies to a holiday rental or temporary accommodation: it is a housing support programme for a main residence, not tourist accommodation.

INCOME LIMITS

Applicants need a regular source of income, and the relevant income of the household must normally be no more than three times the IPREM, calculated using 14 payments.

There are higher income limits in certain circumstances. The official rules allow up to four times IPREM for some large families and people with disabilities, while certain special-category large families and people with a recognised disability of at least 33% can have an income limit of up to five times IPREM.

The rules also set conditions around how income is established, including requirements relating to regular income and employment history or the expected duration of an income source.

HOW MUCH CAN YOUR RENT BE?

For the 2026 Canary Islands call, the maximum qualifying rent for a home is €900 per month.

For someone renting a room, the maximum is €450 per month.

The €250 monthly grant is subject to the actual monthly rent or room price, so it cannot exceed the amount being paid. There are also specific rules where several eligible applicants live in the same property.

There are separate rules concerning items such as garages, storage rooms, community charges and other additional costs, so applicants should check the official conditions rather than assuming every amount shown on a tenancy agreement counts as rent.

OTHER IMPORTANT CONDITIONS

The property must be the beneficiary's habitual and permanent residence and this normally has to be demonstrated through registration documentation (empadronamiento).

Applicants, and in relevant cases other members of the household, generally cannot own or have usufruct rights over another home in Spain. The official rules include exceptions, for example where a property is unavailable because of separation or divorce, circumstances beyond the person's control, or accessibility issues connected with disability.

The rules also prevent the subsidy being used where the tenant or another household member has a prohibited close family relationship with the landlord, or certain ownership or legal links to the landlord.

HOW DO YOU APPLY IN CANARY ISLANDS?

Applications can be submitted electronically using the official Gobierno de Canarias procedure for the Bono Alquiler Joven. Other legally permitted registration methods are also available.

The application window runs from 18 September until 8 October 2026, inclusive.

One point worth knowing is that this is a non-competitive grant. Applicants do not compete by having their circumstances scored against everyone else. However, applications are processed according to the rules and, where funding availability becomes an issue, the date on which a complete application is registered can matter.

The Government says the maximum period for resolving applications is six months, although the resolution for this call is required before 31 December 2026.

HOW IS THE MONEY PAID?

The assistance is not simply handed over as one €6,000 payment. The official rules provide for payments in instalments, generally every six months, after the required proof of rent payments has been provided.

Applicants should therefore keep their rental payment records and other supporting documentation carefully.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR LANZAROTE?

For young residents trying to rent in Lanzarote, where finding suitable long-term accommodation can be difficult, the assistance could make a meaningful difference to monthly housing costs.

It is also worth remembering that this particular 2026 Bono Alquiler Joven call is described by the Canary Islands Government as a transitional programme. The national housing framework has changed for 2026-2030, with the existing Bono Alquiler Joven model being replaced in future calls by a new young people's emancipation rental-aid scheme.

So, if you are aged 18 to 35, live in Lanzarote and are renting — or are preparing to rent — this is a scheme worth checking now rather than assuming another identical application window will automatically open later.

WHERE TO CHECK THE OFFICIAL INFORMATION

The safest place to check the full requirements and submit an application is the official Gobierno de Canarias website and its electronic procedure for Bono Alquiler Joven.
