Caleta de Famara Beach Closed to Bathers Following Water Quality Tests

Visitors and residents planning a trip to Caleta de Famara are being advised that the beach has been temporarily closed to swimmers after routine water quality tests detected microbiological contamination.

The decision was taken by Teguise Town Hall, following analysis carried out by the Canary Islands’ Public Health authorities, which found the seawater did not currently meet the standards required for safe bathing. As a precaution, a red flag has been raised and entering the water is prohibited until further notice.

What Has Been Found?

Officials have confirmed that the closure is due to microbiological contamination identified during routine testing. At the time of writing, authorities have not confirmed the exact source of the contamination, and investigations are continuing.

Fresh water samples have already been collected, and the beach will be reassessed as soon as laboratory results become available. If the new tests show the water has returned to safe levels, the swimming ban could be lifted quickly.

Is It Safe to Visit?

Yes. The closure only affects bathing in the sea.

Visitors can still enjoy the village, beachfront restaurants, cafés and spectacular coastal scenery.

Impact on Tourists and Residents

Caleta de Famara is one of Lanzarote’s most popular destinations, attracting photographers, walkers and beach lovers throughout the year. The temporary closure may affect holidaymakers hoping to swim, but officials stress that the measure is purely precautionary and has been introduced to protect public health.

Authorities are working to identify the cause of the contamination and restore normal bathing conditions as soon as possible.

Advice for Anyone Visiting

If you’re planning to visit over the coming days:

  • Check for the latest official updates before swimming.
  • Respect the red flag and do not enter the water while the closure remains in force.
  • Consider visiting one of Lanzarote’s other beaches if swimming is your main priority.
  • Continue to follow any advice issued by local authorities.
