Canary Islands Airports Welcome Nearly 27 Million Passengers in Record-Breaking First Half of 2026
The Canary Islands’ eight airports handled almost 27 million passengers during the first six months of 2026, underlining the continued strength of the archipelago as one of Europe’s most popular holiday destinations.
According to figures released by AENA, a total of nearly 27 million travellers passed through the islands’ airports between January and June 2026, representing continued growth in both domestic and international air travel.
The increase has been driven largely by strong demand from key tourism markets, including the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Ireland, France and the Netherlands, with airlines maintaining high frequencies throughout the winter and summer seasons.
Lanzarote Continues Strong Performance
Lanzarote Airport remains one of the busiest in the Canary Islands, welcoming millions of passengers during the first half of the year. The island continues to benefit from year-round connectivity, with dozens of daily flights linking it to major European cities.
The sustained growth reflects Lanzarote’s enduring popularity with holidaymakers seeking sunshine, beaches, outdoor activities and a mild climate throughout the year.
Tourism Industry Remains Positive
The passenger figures are encouraging news for hotels, restaurants, car hire companies, excursion providers and other tourism businesses across the Canary Islands, with visitor demand remaining resilient despite ongoing economic uncertainty in parts of Europe.
Airport operators continue to invest in infrastructure and passenger services to accommodate increasing traveller numbers while improving the overall airport experience.
With the busy summer season now underway, the Canary Islands are expected to continue seeing high passenger volumes over the coming months, reinforcing tourism’s role as one of the region’s most important economic sectors.
