Canary Islands Endure Intense Heat as Temperatures Climb Above 42°C for Third Consecutive Day
The Canary Islands are continuing to experience an exceptional spell of hot weather, with parts of the archipelago recording some of the highest temperatures in Spain for the third day in a row. The prolonged heat has brought daytime temperatures above 42°C in the hottest inland locations, while many areas also experienced overnight temperatures that failed to drop below 30°C, offering little relief after sunset.
For both residents and tourists, the combination of extreme daytime heat and unusually warm nights has made conditions particularly uncomfortable, especially for vulnerable people, young children and those spending long periods outdoors.
Where Were the Highest Temperatures?
The highest official temperature recorded during the latest heat episode reached 42.6°C in the Canary Islands, making the archipelago the hottest part of Spain for the third consecutive day. Inland and southern areas have been most affected, while coastal locations have generally remained slightly cooler thanks to sea breezes, although temperatures have still been well above seasonal averages.
Why Are the Nights So Warm?
One of the most unusual aspects of this heatwave has been the exceptionally high overnight temperatures.
In many locations, temperatures remained above 30°C throughout the night, making it difficult for many people to sleep. These extremely warm nights prevent buildings from cooling down, meaning homes and apartments retain heat well into the following day.
Health experts warn that prolonged periods without cooler nighttime temperatures can increase the risk of heat-related illnesses because the body has less opportunity to recover from the daytime heat.
What Does This Mean for Lanzarote?
Although the most extreme temperatures have been recorded elsewhere in the Canary Islands, Lanzarote has been experiencing unusually hot conditions, with high daytime temperatures, strong sunshine and warm evenings.
Visitors planning beach days, hiking trips or excursions to attractions such as Timanfaya National Park should take extra precautions, including:
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
- Avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the afternoon.
- Wear lightweight clothing, sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat.
- Apply high-factor sunscreen regularly.
- Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles, even for a few minutes.
Heat Continues Across Spain
The Canary Islands are not alone in experiencing exceptional temperatures. Much of Spain has been affected by persistent heat throughout the summer, with meteorological records showing that recent weeks have been among the hottest ever observed in many parts of the country.
While temperatures in Lanzarote are generally lower than those recorded in some inland parts of the archipelago, the island’s dry climate and intense sunshine can still create dangerous conditions during prolonged periods of extreme heat.
Advice for Tourists and Residents
Whether you’re enjoying a holiday in Lanzarote or live on the island year-round, staying cool should be a priority during periods of high temperatures.
Air-conditioned spaces, shaded areas and regular hydration can significantly reduce the risk of heat exhaustion or heatstroke. Older adults, infants and anyone with underlying health conditions should take particular care until temperatures begin to ease.
