Canary Islands Issue Four Weather Pre-Alerts as Authorities Urge Public to Stay Vigilant
Residents and holidaymakers across the Canary Islands are being advised to stay informed after the regional government activated four separate weather pre-alerts covering high temperatures, strong winds, dangerous coastal conditions and an increased wildfire risk. While not every island is affected in the same way, officials are encouraging everyone to take sensible precautions as conditions are expected to change throughout the day.
What Does This Mean for Lanzarote?
For Lanzarote, the main concerns are strengthening winds and the potential for very dry conditions, which can increase the risk of fires spreading quickly if one starts. Gusts are expected to become stronger during the afternoon and evening, particularly in exposed inland areas and along parts of the coast.
Although Lanzarote is not currently included in the wildfire pre-alert areas, the island’s dry climate means authorities are still urging people to act responsibly and avoid activities that could accidentally start a fire.
High Temperatures Across the Canary Islands
The heat pre-alert mainly affects parts of Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Fuerteventura, where temperatures are expected to climb into the 30s Celsius, with some inland areas forecast to reach around 37°C.
Visitors travelling between islands should be aware that conditions can vary considerably depending on the destination.
Rough Seas and Dangerous Coastal Conditions
Another pre-alert has been issued for hazardous sea conditions, with strong north-easterly winds creating rough seas and large waves in several parts of the archipelago.
While the most severe coastal conditions are forecast elsewhere in the Canary Islands, anyone planning boat trips, water sports or coastal walks should check local weather updates before heading out. Ferry services can also be affected when sea conditions deteriorate.
Wildfire Risk Remains High
The Canary Islands Government has kept its forest fire pre-alert in place for several western islands as part of its summer wildfire prevention measures. Hot weather, low humidity and strong winds can allow fires to spread rapidly, which is why officials are reminding both residents and tourists to:
- Never discard cigarette ends.
- Avoid lighting barbecues or open fires where prohibited.
- Dispose of rubbish responsibly.
- Report any signs of smoke or fire immediately to the emergency services.
These precautions are especially important during the summer months when vegetation becomes extremely dry.
Advice for Tourists Visiting Lanzarote
If you’re holidaying in Lanzarote over the coming days:
- Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.
- Wear sunscreen, a hat and lightweight clothing.
- Be extra careful on beaches if the sea looks rough.
- Secure loose outdoor furniture on balconies or terraces if winds increase.
- Follow advice issued by local authorities and your accommodation provider.
Most tourist attractions, restaurants and resorts continue to operate as normal, but it’s always worth checking the latest weather forecasts before planning outdoor activities.
Stay Updated
Weather conditions in the Canary Islands can change quickly, particularly during the summer months. Visitors and residents are encouraged to monitor official weather forecasts and follow any advice issued by the Canary Islands Government and emergency services if alerts are upgraded.
