Civil Guard Union Raises Concerns Over Working Conditions at Lanzarote Airport

The Spanish Association of Civil Guards (AEGC) has publicly criticised working conditions for officers based at César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport, claiming that some Civil Guard facilities are operating without adequate air conditioning or ventilation during the height of the Canary Islands summer.

The issue comes as Lanzarote Airport continues to welcome thousands of passengers every day during one of its busiest periods of the year, with temperatures across the island regularly climbing well above 30°C.

Union Says High Temperatures Are Affecting Officers

According to the AEGC, officers working inside certain airport facilities have been forced to endure excessive indoor temperatures because of insufficient climate control.

The association says these conditions are incompatible with modern workplace health and safety standards and has called on Aena, the company that manages Spain’s airports, to take urgent action to improve ventilation and install effective air conditioning where needed.

Reported Health Incident

The union also claims that the extreme heat has already had an impact on staff wellbeing, stating that one Civil Guard officer recently suffered a fainting episode believed to be linked to the high temperatures inside the facilities.

While no disruption to airport operations has been reported, the association argues that prolonged exposure to excessive heat could affect both the welfare of officers and their ability to carry out their duties effectively.

Security Operations Continue as Normal

For travellers using Lanzarote Airport, there is currently no indication that security procedures or passenger services have been affected by the complaint. Flights and airport security operations continue as normal.

The issue relates specifically to the working environment within the Civil Guard’s operational areas rather than passenger terminals or public spaces.

AEGC Calls for Immediate Improvements

The association is urging Aena to act quickly by providing proper climate control systems for the Civil Guard facilities at the airport.

AEGC says it intends to continue raising the matter through official and legal channels until improvements are made, arguing that officers responsible for protecting millions of passengers each year deserve safe and appropriate working conditions.
