Container Fire in San Bartolomé Damages Telephone Infrastructure
Emergency crews respond quickly to overnight blaze in Lanzarote
Firefighters from Lanzarote’s Emergency and Security Consortium were called into action during the early hours of the morning after a fire broke out in waste containers in San Bartolomé. The incident, which occurred on Calle San José de Calasanz, not only destroyed two rubbish containers but also damaged a nearby telephone pole and associated wiring.
According to emergency services, the alert was received through the Canary Islands Emergency Coordination Centre (CECOES). Upon arrival, firefighters found the containers fully engulfed in flames, with the fire spreading heat and damage to telecommunications infrastructure located nearby. Crews used water jets and spray systems to bring the blaze under control and prevent it from spreading further. Local Police officers also attended the scene to assist with traffic management and public safety.
No Injuries Reported
Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the incident. However, damage to telephone infrastructure could potentially affect communication services in the surrounding area while repairs are carried out.
Although the cause of the fire has not yet been officially confirmed, container fires remain a recurring issue across Lanzarote, with emergency services regularly responding to similar incidents in municipalities including Arrecife, Playa Blanca, and Tinajo.
Impact on Residents and Visitors
While this latest fire was quickly extinguished, it serves as a reminder of the importance of reporting smoke or suspicious activity immediately. For both residents and tourists staying on the island, emergency response teams continue to play a crucial role in maintaining public safety across Lanzarote’s towns and resorts.
Visitors are unlikely to experience any significant disruption, although residents in the immediate vicinity may notice repair work on telecommunications infrastructure over the coming days.
Fire Safety Reminder
Local authorities encourage residents to:
- Report fires immediately by calling 112.
- Avoid disposing of hot ashes, charcoal, or flammable materials in waste containers.
- Keep clear of emergency vehicles when incidents occur.
- Report damaged infrastructure that may pose a safety risk.
The swift response from firefighters prevented the situation from escalating further and helped minimise damage to surrounding property.
