Cyclist Rescued After Collision with Car in Arrecife
A cyclist was taken to hospital after a collision involving a car in Arrecife, prompting a response from Lanzarote’s emergency services.
The incident happened at around 2pm on Friday at one of the roundabouts on Calle Tenderete in the island’s capital. According to information reported by local newspaper La Voz de Lanzarote, callers who alerted the emergency services initially said the cyclist was trapped beneath the vehicle.
By the time firefighters from the Lanzarote Security and Emergency Consortium arrived, the cyclist had been freed from beneath the car. However, the person was still on the ground, with their legs caught in the bicycle.
Medical personnel from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) were already treating the injured cyclist. Firefighters assisted the medical team in moving the patient onto a scoop stretcher and then a vacuum mattress, equipment used to help support and immobilise an injured person during handling. The cyclist was subsequently transferred to hospital.
No further details about the cyclist’s identity or condition after admission to hospital were included in the report, so these remain unconfirmed.
Second cyclist incident in Arrecife within 48 hours
The collision was the second reported incident involving a cyclist in Arrecife within 48 hours. On the previous Thursday, another cyclist was taken to hospital after colliding with a car in the capital. That person was reported to have sustained a head injury described as moderate.
The two incidents are a reminder that cyclists and motorists share busy roads across Lanzarote, including urban streets and roundabouts. Drivers should check carefully for bicycles when approaching junctions, changing lanes or turning, while cyclists should remain visible, follow road rules and use suitable lights and protective equipment.
Road safety advice for visitors and residents
Lanzarote is popular with recreational cyclists, from people exploring Arrecife to riders travelling along the island’s coastal and rural routes. If you are driving on the island, take extra care when passing cyclists and approaching roundabouts. If you are cycling, stay alert to surrounding traffic and avoid assuming that drivers have seen you.
Anyone who witnesses a road collision should contact the emergency services and give the location as clearly as possible. In Spain, the emergency number is 112.
The confirmed facts in this report are limited to the time and location of the Arrecife collision, the rescue and medical response, the hospital transfer, and the earlier cyclist collision reported the previous day. Further information should be added only if confirmed by the relevant authorities.
