Do You Really Need to Hire a Car in Lanzarote?

One of the most common questions visitors ask when planning a Lanzarote holiday is whether they need to hire a car. The answer depends on where you are staying, how much of the island you want to explore and whether you prefer to plan your own days or book organised trips. You can enjoy a holiday without driving, especially in the main resorts, but a car can make reaching rural areas and fitting several stops into one day much easier.

When you probably do not need a car

If your plans mainly involve relaxing at the beach, visiting restaurants and enjoying the nightlife in Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca or Costa Teguise, you may be able to manage without a hire car. Each resort has places to eat and shop, and taxis or buses can help with selected journeys. Before booking, check the distance between your accommodation and the places you expect to visit—resorts can stretch along the coast, and a map distance does not always tell you how easy a walk will be.

Buses: useful for some journeys

Lanzarote’s Intercity Bus service connects several towns and resorts. Routes include services linking Arrecife with Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca, as well as routes to places such as Teguise, Famara and Órzola. However, services and frequencies vary by route and day, and some sightseeing stops are not served conveniently. Check the official timetable before relying on a bus for a day trip, and allow time for connections.

Can you get from the airport by bus?

There are public bus services between Lanzarote Airport and several destinations, including services connecting the airport with Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca. The best route depends on your arrival time and accommodation. Check the current timetable on the official Intercity Lanzarote website before travelling, especially if you land late, have lots of luggage or need to connect to another service.

Taxis and transfers

Taxis are convenient for direct trips, late arrivals and journeys where bus connections are awkward. A pre-booked transfer may suit families, groups or travellers who want to go straight to their accommodation. Compare the total cost for your party with the price of car hire, and confirm whether child seats, luggage or late-night arrivals affect the arrangements.

Organised excursions can replace some driving

If you want to visit major attractions but do not want to drive, organised excursions can be a straightforward option. They may include transport and a guide, and can save the effort of planning parking and routes. Compare the itinerary carefully: check what is included, how long stops last, whether meals or entrance fees cost extra and where pick-up takes place.

When hiring a car makes sense

A hire car is useful if you want to explore several places in one day, visit smaller villages, stop at viewpoints or travel at your own pace. It can also help if your accommodation is outside a main resort or

you are travelling with children, beach equipment or mobility needs. Remember that the driver must be comfortable with the roads and local rules, and should never drink alcohol before driving.

What about parking and rural roads?

Main roads make many island journeys straightforward, but rural roads can be narrow and some viewpoints have limited parking. Do not stop in the carriageway for photographs, block farm entrances or drive onto unmarked tracks. At coastal sites such as Los Hervideros, obey barriers and warning signs. Check any rental agreement for insurance excess, fuel policy, deposit, mileage and what to do if the vehicle is damaged.

A simple decision guide

Choose no car if you plan to stay mostly in your resort and take a few organised excursions. Consider hiring a car for one or two days if you want to explore a particular area without paying for a full week. A longer hire may make sense if you plan to travel around the island most days. Compare the full cost—including insurance, fuel and parking—with buses, taxis and excursions rather than looking at the headline rental price alone.

Our advice

You do not have to hire a car to enjoy Lanzarote, but it can open up more of the island. Start by listing the places you genuinely want to visit, then check whether buses or excursions serve them at suitable times. If most of your plans are within walking distance of your resort, save the money. If exploring at your own pace is a big part of your holiday, a car may be worth it. Always check current timetables and rental conditions before booking.
