Elderly Man Injured After House Fire in Costa Teguise, Lanzarote

An elderly man has suffered facial burns and signs of smoke inhalation after a fire broke out inside his home in Costa Teguise, Lanzarote.

The incident happened on Friday, 21 August, at a property on Calle Chafarí, with emergency services called after a member of the public reported the fire.

Firefighters Called to Costa Teguise Property

When firefighters from the Lanzarote emergency services arrived at the property, they found that the fire had been concentrated in the kitchen and that it was already almost completely extinguished.

The resident, described as an elderly man, was found with burns to his face and signs that he had inhaled smoke.

Firefighters carried out temperature checks inside the kitchen and used water to cool parts of the furniture affected by the fire. They then carried out further checks to make sure the area was safe and that temperatures had fallen.

Resident Initially Declined Ambulance

Emergency personnel recommended that the injured man receive medical attention.

According to reports, he initially declined to be taken to hospital by ambulance. He later agreed to attend a health centre accompanied by a family member.

There have been no further details released about the man’s condition.

The emergency crews completed a final inspection of the affected area before bringing the Costa Teguise house fire operation to an end.

Fire Safety Reminder for Lanzarote Residents and Visitors

Although kitchen fires can happen anywhere, incidents such as this are also a reminder of the importance of taking care around cooking equipment.

For people living in Lanzarote, as well as visitors staying in holiday apartments or villas, it is important never to leave cooking unattended and to know where the property’s fire extinguisher or other safety equipment is located.

If a fire starts in a kitchen, residents and visitors should leave the property if it is unsafe to remain inside and contact the emergency services.

In Spain, 112 is the emergency telephone number for situations requiring immediate assistance.

At the time of publication, the cause of the Costa Teguise fire had not been confirmed.
