Fire in Playa Honda Garage Prompts Emergency Response in Lanzarote
A fire involving stored belongings in a communal garage area in Playa Honda brought emergency services to Calle Mayor on Tuesday afternoon, 13 October.
According to reports based on information from Lanzarote’s emergency services, the incident took place near the roundabout at the entrance to Playa Honda, in the municipality of San Bartolomé. Firefighters found that flames had affected a mattress and a substantial quantity of clothing gathered at the bottom of a staircase that was not in use.
The fire was tackled by the Lanzarote Fire and Rescue Service, part of the island’s Security and Emergency Consortium. Crews used water to extinguish the flames, moved the affected clothing and other material, and then applied foam to help ensure the fire was fully out.
Once the flames had been dealt with, firefighters entered the garage area to ventilate the smoke that had built up inside. Local Police and the Guardia Civil were also reported to have attended the incident.
Playa Honda is a busy coastal town in San Bartolomé, close to Lanzarote Airport and the island’s main shopping and residential areas. Incidents such as this are a reminder that smoke can spread quickly through enclosed spaces, including communal garages and stairwells.
Fire safety advice for residents and visitors
Residents and holidaymakers can help reduce risks by keeping communal staircases, corridors and garage access routes clear. Avoid storing mattresses, clothing, cardboard or other combustible items in shared escape routes, and never block access for emergency crews.
If you discover a fire, move away from smoke and flames, alert others if it is safe to do so, and call 112 in an emergency in the Canary Islands. Do not enter a smoke-filled garage or attempt to tackle a fire if doing so could put you at risk.
