Firefighters Rescue Woman Trapped Inside Shopping Centre Toilet in Costa Teguise
A routine visit to a shopping centre in Costa Teguise turned into an unusual rescue operation after firefighters were called to help free a woman who became trapped inside a toilet cubicle.
The incident took place at the Las Cucharas Shopping Centre, where shoppers initially tried to help the woman after she became unable to get out of the locked cubicle. Despite several attempts to open the door, they were unsuccessful, prompting a call to the emergency services.
Firefighters from the Lanzarote Emergency Consortium arrived at the scene and used specialist equipment to safely open the door and release the woman. Fortunately, she was not reported to have suffered any injuries during the incident, and the rescue was completed without further complications.
Although incidents like this are uncommon, they highlight the rapid response of Lanzarote’s emergency services, who regularly deal with a wide variety of situations across the island—from road traffic accidents and construction rescues to helping people trapped in lifts, vehicles, and even locked facilities.
For both residents and the thousands of tourists visiting Lanzarote each week, the incident serves as a reminder that help is never far away should an unexpected situation arise.
Las Cucharas Shopping Centre is one of Costa Teguise’s best-known commercial areas, located close to the popular Las Cucharas Beach. It attracts visitors throughout the year with its cafés, restaurants, bars and shops, making it a busy location during both the day and evening.
Thankfully, what could have been a stressful experience ended safely thanks to the quick actions of fellow shoppers and the professionalism of the firefighters who responded.
