Four Arrested After Suspected Drug Boat Runs Aground Near Mala, Lanzarote
A suspected drug trafficking operation ended on the north coast of Lanzarote after a speedboat ran aground near Mala, leading to the arrest of four men.
According to information released by Lanzarote’s Emergency Consortium, the incident unfolded on Saturday evening when the vessel was first spotted approaching Playa de la Garita in Arrieta. Instead of coming ashore there, the boat continued south towards the cliffs of La Lajera, where it eventually ran aground.
Witnesses at the scene reported seeing people on board throwing several packages into the sea before the occupants reached the shoreline. While authorities have not officially confirmed what the packages contained, the operation is being treated as a suspected case of drug trafficking.
Four Arrested Following Police Response
Emergency services and law enforcement responded quickly after the vessel became stranded. The timing of the incident coincided with the Fiestas del Carmen celebrations in Arrieta, meaning officers from the Guardia Civil and Local Police were already deployed in the area, allowing for a rapid response.
Officials confirmed that four men were arrested, consisting of three Spanish nationals and one French national, in connection with the incident. Investigations remain ongoing as authorities work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the suspected smuggling operation.
Although drug trafficking incidents occasionally occur around the Canary Islands due to their location between Europe and Africa, they remain relatively rare and are generally isolated police operations.
For tourists visiting Lanzarote, the island continues to be regarded as one of Spain’s safest holiday destinations. The incident was handled swiftly by local authorities and is not expected to have any impact on visitors enjoying the island’s beaches, resorts or attractions.
Police investigations continue, and further information may be released as enquiries progress.
