Four People Rescued After Becoming Trapped Inside Lanzarote Car Hire Depot

Two women and two children had an unexpected end to their evening after becoming trapped inside a Lanzarote car hire depot in the early hours of Monday morning, prompting an emergency response from the island’s firefighters.

The group had reportedly gone to collect a hire vehicle when they discovered they were unable to leave the premises after the depot became secured. Unable to get out, emergency services were called to assist.

Firefighters from the Lanzarote Fire Consortium attended the scene and safely freed the four occupants.

An Unusual Call-Out for Lanzarote Firefighters

While the Lanzarote emergency services regularly respond to road traffic collisions, fires and medical emergencies, this call-out was of a very different nature.

Being accidentally locked inside a commercial property is uncommon, but the swift response ensured the situation was quickly brought under control. Firefighters were able to gain access and allow the group to leave safely.

What Visitors Should Know When Collecting a Hire Car in Lanzarote

Lanzarote welcomes millions of visitors each year, with car hire in Lanzarote remaining one of the most popular ways to explore the island. Although incidents like this are extremely rare, it’s worth remembering a few simple tips:

  • Check the depot’s opening and closing times before collecting your vehicle.
  • If arriving late, confirm the collection procedure with the rental company in advance.
  • Keep the rental company’s emergency contact number handy.
  • If you ever find yourself locked inside a premises or unable to leave safely, contact the emergency services rather than attempting to force an exit.

A Happy Ending

Thankfully, the incident ended safely, with the two women and two children leaving the depot unharmed after firefighters intervened. Although it was undoubtedly a stressful experience, it serves as a reminder of the professionalism and quick response of Lanzarote’s emergency services, who are on hand around the clock to deal with both major emergencies and unusual situations alike.
