Four Year Old Girl Has Died Following Hotel Pool Incident in Puerto del Carmen

A four year old girl has tragically died following a swimming pool incident at a hotel in Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote, marking the second fatal child drowning linked to a hotel pool on the island this summer.

Emergency services were called to the hotel on Sunday afternoon after reports that the child had been pulled from the water in cardiac arrest. The hotel’s lifeguard immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and used a defibrillator before paramedics from the Canary Islands Emergency Service arrived.

Medical teams continued advanced life-saving treatment for around an hour, but despite their efforts, the young girl could not be revived.

According to reports, the child was on holiday in Lanzarote with her parents and grandparents. The circumstances surrounding the incident have not been officially confirmed, and the relevant authorities are expected to investigate the events leading up to the tragedy.

Second Child Pool Tragedy This Summer

The heartbreaking incident comes just weeks after another four-year-old child lost their life following a separate hotel pool drowning in Playa Blanca.

While both cases are unrelated, the tragedies serve as a sobering reminder of how quickly accidents can happen around water, even at family-friendly holiday resorts with safety measures in place.

Water Safety Reminder for Residents and Visitors

As Lanzarote enters one of its busiest periods of the year, emergency services continue to stress the importance of constant adult supervision whenever children are near swimming pools.

Water safety experts advise that drowning is often silent and can occur within seconds. Parents and guardians are encouraged to:

  • Keep young children within arm’s reach around pools.
  • Avoid distractions such as mobile phones while supervising.
  • Ensure children use appropriate flotation aids where necessary.
  • Familiarise themselves with the location of lifeguards and emergency equipment.
  • Learn basic CPR, which can make a critical difference in an emergency.

This is an incredibly sad incident, and our thoughts are with the child’s family, friends, and all those affected, including the hotel staff and emergency responders who worked tirelessly to try to save her.
