Grass Fire in El Mojón Quickly Brought Under Control by Lanzarote Firefighters
A fast response from Lanzarote’s emergency services prevented a grass fire in El Mojón, in the municipality of Teguise, on Thursday 22nd July, from spreading further this week after flames broke out in a rural area.
Firefighters were called to the incident and quickly brought the blaze under control. According to information released by the emergency services, the fire affected approximately 5,000 square metres of dry vegetation, with crews using around 6,000 litres of water to extinguish the flames.
Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries or damage to nearby homes or buildings, with the incident remaining confined to scrubland thanks to the rapid intervention of firefighters.
Dry Conditions Increase Fire Risk in Lanzarote
The incident serves as a reminder that Lanzarote’s dry climate and sparse vegetation can allow fires to spread quickly, particularly during the warmer months when temperatures are high, humidity is low, and winds can strengthen unexpectedly.
Although many grass fires are contained before they become major incidents, emergency services regularly urge residents and visitors to remain vigilant and avoid activities that could accidentally ignite dry vegetation.
Advice for Residents and Visitors
Whether you’re exploring Lanzarote’s countryside or enjoying one of its walking trails, it’s important to help reduce the risk of wildfires by:
- Never discarding cigarette ends onto the ground.
- Avoiding lighting barbecues or open flames outside designated areas.
- Not leaving glass bottles or other litter in rural areas.
- Reporting any signs of smoke or fire immediately by calling 112, the Canary Islands emergency number.
Quick reporting can make a significant difference, allowing emergency crews to respond before a small fire develops into a larger incident.
Emergency Services Praised for Rapid Response
The swift actions of Lanzarote’s firefighters helped prevent what could have become a much larger wildfire, particularly given the dry conditions affecting many parts of the island.
As temperatures continue to rise during the summer season, both locals and tourists are encouraged to remain alert while enjoying Lanzarote’s natural landscapes.
