GUATIZA FIRE: EMERGENCY SERVICES TACKLE BLAZE IN AREA OF ACCUMULATED SCRAP AND VEHICLE PARTS

A fire broke out in Guatiza, in the municipality of Teguise, on Tuesday 6 October, with firefighters called to an outdoor area on Avenida Garafía where a large amount of accumulated material was burning.

According to information from the Lanzarote Security and Emergency Consortium, the emergency services were alerted through the Cecoes 1-1-2 system at around 5:25pm. When firefighters arrived, they found the fire developing across an outdoor area of approximately 100 square metres.

The materials involved included scrap metal, household items and remains of vehicle parts. Because this type of mixed material can continue smouldering beneath the surface, extinguishing the fire required more than simply putting out the visible flames.

Lanzarote firefighters deployed two water lines and worked directly on the affected material until the fire was completely extinguished.

Extra measures were then taken to reduce the possibility of the fire starting again. Firefighters applied a wetting agent to the affected area, helping water penetrate combustible materials more effectively. They also carried out a detailed inspection afterwards, checking for active flames and hidden hot spots that could potentially cause the fire to reignite.

The operation was eventually completed after the area was checked and considered safe. Guardia Civil officers and Policía Local de Teguise were also present at the scene.

WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE GUATIZA FIRE

At this stage, the information released by the emergency services confirms the location, approximate size and firefighting operation, but does not give a cause for the fire. There is also no indication in the emergency report that the incident involved a wider emergency affecting tourist resorts elsewhere in Lanzarote.

For visitors staying in Lanzarote, Guatiza is a small village in the municipality of Teguise, away from the island's main tourist centres such as Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca and Costa Teguise. The incident was confined to the outdoor area where the accumulated materials were located.

WHY FIRES INVOLVING SCRAP MATERIAL CAN BE DIFFICULT TO EXTINGUISH

Fires involving piles of discarded materials, vehicle parts, furniture and other mixed waste can be particularly challenging for firefighters. Flames may disappear while heat remains trapped underneath the surface, which is why crews often spend additional time soaking, checking and cooling the affected area.

The use of a wetting agent in Guatiza was an additional precaution designed to improve water penetration and reduce the risk of reignition.

LANZAROTE FIRE NEWS AND LOCAL EMERGENCIES

For residents and visitors, incidents such as this are a reminder of the importance of reporting fires quickly. In Spain, the emergency number is 112, which connects callers with the appropriate emergency services.

The latest information from Lanzarote's emergency authorities indicates that there were no active emergency alerts associated with this Guatiza incident after the firefighting operation was completed.
