Halloween Events Cancelled in Lanzarote Following Spain Train Tragedy: What Visitors Need to Know
The Ayuntamiento de Tías has published an official statement announcing the cancellation of its planned Halloween events. The council said the decision was taken in light of the railway tragedy and the three days of official mourning, as a mark of respect and solidarity with the victims, their families and everyone affected.
The announcement affects celebrations that residents and visitors had been looking forward to in Puerto del Carmen and Tías, including the scheduled Halloween activities.
Tías cancels its Halloween programme
The cancellation is particularly significant for Puerto del Carmen, where Halloween celebrations were due to begin on Thursday, 29 October.
The original programme included a spooky street parade from Calle Bajamar towards Plaza del Varadero, followed by a haunted-house experience. Further activities had been planned in Tías for Saturday, 31 October, including a parade, costume competitions and family entertainment.
These activities should now be treated as cancelled under the council’s official announcement. The council has asked residents and visitors to understand its decision during this period of mourning.
The municipality had also planned its traditional Noche de Finaos gathering, celebrating the Canarian tradition of remembering loved ones who have passed away.
Visitors should check the council’s latest announcements before travelling to any municipal event.

What about Halloween events elsewhere in Lanzarote?
Several councils and private organisers had announced Halloween celebrations before the accident, but not every event has a confirmed cancellation or continuation notice available. It is best to check with local town halls or businesses directly to see if other events are continuing, before making plans to attend.
Why are events being cancelled?
The cancellations follow a tragic railway accident in the province of Toledo, mainland Spain, which has prompted widespread expressions of sympathy and official mourning.
The Cabildo de Lanzarote and several local councils have also joined expressions of condolence, including minutes of silence in memory of those who lost their lives.
Will Halloween still be celebrated in Lanzarote?
For now, the answer depends on the individual event and organiser.
The cancellation of municipal celebrations in Tías does not, by itself, establish that every Halloween party across Lanzarote has been cancelled.
If you have booked a ticketed event, check directly with the organiser for confirmation and information about refunds or rescheduling. Families planning to attend council-organised activities should consult the relevant town hall’s latest announcements.
Events may be rescheduled and we will update as further confirmed information becomes available.
