Heat Alert Ends, But Wind and Rough Sea Warnings Remain Across the Canary Islands

While the recent spell of unusually hot weather has eased, Lanzarote weather conditions still require caution, with yellow weather warnings for strong winds and rough seas remaining in force across parts of the Canary Islands.

The Canary Islands Government has officially lifted its pre-alert for high temperatures after temperatures began to fall back towards seasonal levels. However, the latest forecasts indicate that strong trade winds and hazardous coastal conditions will continue to affect several islands.

What Does This Mean for Lanzarote?

For residents and tourists in Lanzarote, the end of the heat alert is welcome news, especially after several days of hotter-than-normal conditions. Daytime temperatures are now expected to remain around the high 20s, making outdoor activities more comfortable.

However, visitors should not assume all weather-related risks have disappeared.

The island is still experiencing the strong trade winds that are common during the summer months. Gusts can become particularly powerful in exposed inland areas, on higher ground and along the southern coastline.

Rough Seas Continue

Although many beaches remain open, the sea can still be dangerous in certain locations.

Strong winds are creating rougher sea conditions, particularly on north- and west-facing coasts where waves and stronger currents can develop quickly. Authorities advise swimmers to:

  • Always follow the advice of lifeguards.
  • Observe beach warning flags before entering the water.
  • Avoid swimming at unguarded beaches if the sea looks rough.
  • Take extra care if participating in water sports such as surfing, paddleboarding or kayaking.

Travel and Outdoor Activities

The windy conditions are not expected to cause widespread disruption, but they could affect:

  • Ferry crossings between islands.
  • Boat excursions.
  • Coastal walks near large waves.
  • High-sided vehicles on exposed roads.

Most flights are expected to operate normally, although travellers should always check directly with their airline if weather conditions change unexpectedly.

Typical Summer Weather

It’s worth remembering that July and August are traditionally the windiest months in Lanzarote. These refreshing Atlantic trade winds help keep temperatures comfortable compared with many parts of mainland Spain, even when inland areas elsewhere are experiencing heatwaves.

Stay Updated

If you’re visiting Lanzarote over the coming days, it’s sensible to:

  • Check the latest local weather forecast before heading out.
  • Respect beach safety advice and warning flags.
  • Secure loose outdoor furniture or umbrellas if staying in holiday accommodation.
  • Stay hydrated, even though temperatures have eased.

While the heat may have subsided, Lanzarote’s summer winds remain a feature of the season, so a little extra caution around the coast will help ensure a safe and enjoyable stay.
