Heat, Heart and Heroics: Ironman Lanzarote Delivers Another Unforgettable Day

The roads of Lanzarote came alive once again yesterday as thousands of athletes, supporters and spectators gathered across the island for one of the toughest endurance events in the world — the legendary IRONMAN Lanzarote.

From the early-morning swim start at Puerto del Carmen to the emotional finish-line scenes late into the evening, the atmosphere across the island was electric. Tourists and locals lined the promenade before sunrise, coffees in hand, watching nervous athletes prepare to tackle the brutal 3.8km swim, 180km bike ride and full marathon that make this race one of the most demanding events on the global triathlon calendar.

For spectators, the beauty of Ironman Lanzarote is that every part of the race offers something completely different. The swim start provided pure drama, with hundreds of competitors charging into the Atlantic as the sun rose over the coastline. Later in the morning, crowds moved to roadside viewpoints and volcanic mountain sections to cheer riders battling Lanzarote’s infamous winds and relentless climbs through the island’s lava landscapes.

One of the biggest crowd-pullers throughout the day was the bike course through Famara, Haria and Mirador del Río, where spectators created a Tour de France-style atmosphere, ringing cowbells and shouting encouragement as exhausted athletes pushed through the toughest sections of the course.

By evening, the focus returned to Puerto del Carmen, where supporters packed the finish-line area to witness the emotional marathon finale. The atmosphere after dark is often regarded as the most special part of Ironman Lanzarote, with competitors crossing the line after more than 12, 14 and even 16 hours of racing to huge cheers from the crowd.

This year’s edition also produced record-breaking performances.

Former IRONMAN World Champion Sam Laidlow delivered one of the greatest performances ever seen on the island, smashing the men’s course record by nearly 20 minutes with a sensational winning time of 8:03:40.

In the women’s race, Lucy Charles-Barclay dominated from start to finish, securing another Lanzarote victory in 9:15:39 after leading the race from the opening swim.

The event once again highlighted why Lanzarote remains one of the most iconic destinations in world triathlon. Beyond the elite racing, it was the determination of everyday athletes that captured the imagination of spectators — competitors battling heat, wind, hills and exhaustion simply to hear those famous words at the finish line:

“You are an IRONMAN.”

For visitors lucky enough to witness it firsthand, yesterday was more than just a sporting event — it was one of the most inspiring days on Lanzarote’s calendar.
