Hiker Rescued After Fracturing Ankle on Popular Caldera Blanca Trail in Lanzarote

Emergency Services Respond to an Incident on One of Lanzarote’s Most Popular Walking Routes

Emergency services were called into action on Monday afternoon after a hiker suffered a serious ankle injury while walking in the upper section of Caldera Blanca, one of Lanzarote’s most visited volcanic hiking destinations.

The incident occurred at around 3:00 pm when emergency coordinators received an alert reporting that a walker had fallen on the mountain and was unable to continue. Rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the scene, including firefighters, Local Police officers and medical personnel.

After reaching the injured hiker, firefighters assessed the situation and discovered that she had sustained a fracture to her right ankle. Due to the location of the accident and the difficult terrain surrounding the volcano, rescuers had to immobilise the injury before transporting her down the mountain on a stretcher.

Once safely evacuated from the volcanic trail, the woman was handed over to medical teams and transported by ambulance to Hospital Doctor José Molina Orosa for further treatment.

A Popular Walk with Hidden Challenges

Caldera Blanca is one of the most popular hiking routes in Lanzarote, attracting visitors from across Europe who want to experience the island’s volcanic landscapes away from the more heavily visited areas of Timanfaya National Park.

The route passes through vast lava fields created during the historic eruptions of the 18th century before climbing to the rim of the enormous Caldera Blanca crater. The volcano is one of the highest points in central Lanzarote and offers panoramic views across the island.

However, while many visitors describe the route as accessible, parts of the trail can become challenging, particularly near the upper sections where loose volcanic gravel, uneven surfaces and steep inclines increase the risk of slips and falls.

Not the First Rescue This Year

The latest incident is one of several rescues carried out at Caldera Blanca during recent months.

Emergency services have previously responded to accidents involving hikers who suffered leg and ankle injuries while navigating the volcanic terrain. The recurring nature of these incidents highlights the importance of adequate preparation before attempting the walk.

Although the route does not require technical climbing skills, hikers can underestimate the physical demands of walking across rough lava fields and ascending volcanic slopes exposed to strong winds and changing weather conditions.

Safety Advice for Visitors

Local authorities and experienced walkers recommend that anyone planning to hike Caldera Blanca should:

  • Wear proper hiking footwear with good grip.
  • Carry plenty of water, especially during warmer months.
  • Bring sun protection and a hat.
  • Check weather and wind conditions before setting out.
  • Avoid attempting the route in unsuitable footwear such as sandals or flip-flops.
  • Allow sufficient time to complete the walk safely before sunset.
  • Keep mobile phones charged in case emergency assistance is required.

Visitors should also be aware that there are no shops, facilities or shade along much of the route.

Lanzarote’s Volcanic Landscape Continues to Attract Adventure Seekers

Despite occasional accidents, Caldera Blanca remains one of the most spectacular hiking experiences on the island. The enormous crater, lava fields and views towards Timanfaya make it a favourite destination for visitors seeking a closer look at Lanzarote’s volcanic heritage.

Emergency services have praised the coordinated response that ensured the injured walker received prompt medical attention and was safely removed from the mountain.
