Illegal Taxi Driver Faces €4,000 Fine as Lanzarote Authorities Crack Down on Unlicensed Services
Visitors and residents in Lanzarote are being urged to use only licensed taxis after an alleged illegal taxi driver was stopped by police, with the driver now facing a fine of more than €4,000.
The incident has prompted the Cabildo de Lanzarote to issue a strong warning about the dangers of using unlicensed or so-called “pirate taxis”, particularly during the busy summer season when demand for transport is at its highest.
What Happened?
According to island authorities, local police stopped a vehicle operating as an illegal taxi. Officers reportedly found five passengers inside the vehicle, including one person sitting in the front passenger seat, four in the rear, with one passenger allegedly kneeling on the floor due to a lack of available seating.
The Cabildo has begun proceedings that could see the driver receive a fine exceeding €4,000, while reinforcing its commitment to tackling unlicensed passenger transport across the island.
Why Are Illegal Taxis a Concern?
Officials say the issue goes beyond unfair competition with licensed taxi drivers.
Unlike authorised taxis, illegal operators may not have:
- Valid passenger insurance.
- Required vehicle inspections and safety certifications.
- Licensed or professionally vetted drivers.
- Regulated fares.
This means passengers could face unnecessary safety risks, as well as the possibility of being overcharged with little legal protection if something goes wrong.
Warning to Tourists Visiting Lanzarote
The Cabildo has reminded visitors that some illegal taxi services are advertised through WhatsApp groups, social media or unofficial apps, making them appear legitimate when they are not.
Authorities are encouraging tourists to:
- Use official taxi ranks.
- Book through recognised taxi companies.
- Avoid accepting lifts from drivers offering transport privately.
- Be cautious of unusually cheap fares advertised online.
Choosing a licensed taxi helps ensure the vehicle meets safety standards and that passengers are covered by the appropriate insurance.
Protecting Residents and the Taxi Industry
Cabildo President Oswaldo Betancort said the island will continue taking action against illegal transport operators, stressing that unlicensed taxi services not only create safety concerns but also affect the livelihoods of drivers who operate legally and comply with regulations.
The warning comes as Lanzarote experiences one of its busiest periods of the year, with authorities also exploring temporary measures to improve the availability of legal taxis during peak tourist demand.
What This Means for Lanzarote
With millions of visitors arriving each year, reliable and safe transport is an important part of the island’s reputation. Authorities hope increased enforcement will discourage illegal operators while helping both residents and tourists travel safely.
If you’re visiting Lanzarote, the advice is simple: stick to licensed taxis or other authorised transport providers to ensure your journey is both safe and fully insured.
