Lanzarote cyclist seriously injured after fall in Tinajo
A 50-year-old cyclist was seriously injured after a fall in Tinajo on Thursday afternoon, 1 October 2026.
The incident happened at around 5:37pm on Calle Rancho de Pascua Archinech in the municipality of Tinajo, in the north-west of Lanzarote. According to the Canary Islands Government's emergency service, CECOES 112, an alert was received reporting that a cyclist had fallen while travelling on the road.
The Servicio de Urgencias Canario (SUC) was dispatched to the scene, with both a medicalised ambulance and a basic life-support ambulance sent to assist.
When emergency medical staff arrived, they assessed the 50-year-old man and found that he had suffered serious multiple injuries, described by the emergency service as serious polytrauma. He was stabilised at the scene before being taken by medicalised ambulance to Hospital Doctor José Molina Orosa in Arrecife for further medical treatment.
Local Police also attended the incident and prepared the corresponding report.
At the time of publication, the official emergency report did not provide further information about how the fall happened, nor did it give an update on the cyclist's subsequent condition. It is therefore important not to speculate about the cause of the accident or the man's recovery.
Tinajo is a popular area for cyclists in Lanzarote
Tinajo and the surrounding countryside are well known for their volcanic scenery, quieter roads and challenging cycling routes. The area attracts both local cyclists and visitors who come to Lanzarote specifically to enjoy cycling and outdoor activities.
Lanzarote is particularly popular with road cyclists because of its year-round climate, volcanic landscapes and varied terrain. However, cyclists should always take care on unfamiliar roads, particularly where there are changes in road surface, bends, gradients or limited space.
For motorists, the incident is also a reminder to give cyclists plenty of room and to remain alert when sharing Lanzarote's roads. Many of the island's rural routes are used by a mixture of residents, visitors, cyclists, motorbikes and hire cars.
A reminder for cyclists visiting Lanzarote
If you are planning a cycling holiday in Lanzarote, make sure your bike is properly maintained before setting out and carry suitable safety equipment. A helmet, lights where required, reflective clothing and enough water are sensible precautions, particularly if you are heading into more remote parts of the island.
It is also worth checking your route before setting off. Lanzarote's volcanic terrain can make some journeys more demanding than they initially appear, while wind can be an important factor for cyclists.
Most importantly, cyclists and motorists share responsibility for keeping the island's roads safe.
